so with all these cougar sightings..

I'd imagine I'd want something that packed a punch but a easier to carry around then a 12 gauge.

cougar

If it is a defence gun your looking for i believe a shotgun with buckshot is hard to beat due to the fact if it is moving they are fast and would be a hard target to hit otherwise. 12-20ga with a load of buckshot.

These are cats that rely on ambush kills, they aren't going to come out of the woods at you full on like a Bear...if for the remote reason you have been chosen as a meal the cat will wait to hit you like all it's other prey...from above, and behind with the back of your neck the target.

I seriously doubt a full grown Man is going to be a target for a meal by a Cougar unless there is something seriously wrong with the Big Cat.

Small kids and hunting dogs are another matter.

12 gauge...000 buck.

also women- we lost a young woman out at 2 jack lake a couple of years back- she was over a hundred pounds too- cat ambushed her on a hiking trail in winter

A pistol would like be the best method, you can use it even if not to the ground with the cat on top of you, of course the authorites would rather you get mauled and eaten rather than allow an evil uber weapon like a pistol in the bush.

X2 yep even when there on you a Revolver would be good or a nice knife like my Puma white hunter.
Dont forget that old Timer on Vancouver island i think near Port alice killed a Cougar with his Foldeing pocket knife tho he got mauled up pretty good he killed the cat. It was a smaller female if i remember right.

A big tom like the big one Shot up the RD from me recently, Well i think a bigger knife would be Better :)

A good stout stick is all it takes as a rule.

other than that - a winny trapper in 44 mag would be fine :) Cougars ain't tough.

If a cougar is going to attack, it always attacks from behind.

Therefore, the best defence is to always drag a dead rabbit behind you on about 5 m. of bungee cord. That way, if you feel a big tug on the string, you have plenty of time to call Fish & Wildlife on your cell phone while the cougar eats the rabbit!

As a matter of fact, I think I should market that idea. If some guy can get rich selling moose whistles that you stick on the roof of your car, I should make more money than Bill Gates on dead rabbits and bungee cords. Too bad I never thought of it while the Liberals were in power; I could have imported rabbits from Quebec and got a three bazillion dollar federal grant!

Grab a housecat and try to stuff spaghetti up it's ass . That'll give ya an idea of what a wildcat will do .:D

if a couger is intent on eating you you will : a) not know its there, b) not have time to take saftey off, c) not relize it has attacked untill your bleeding out and paralized.
yes there have been "cat" sightings in eastern ontario, the chances of you being thought as prey by one of these is slim to none as they have plenty of easier prey available to them in the wild the commen occerences of cougers attacking humans are usualy due to logging pushing them out of the mountains, lack of natural prey due t obad winter/supply, over devolopment in there natural habitat, or any combination of the previous. these sorts of incidences usualy happen out west in the rockies. and ontario doesnt have near as high a population per acre of wild habitat as they due out west and there food supply is rather large without the need to be bothered with humans. in time *15-20 years* the needed circumstances may arrise to force cougers to openly attack humans as they do outwest but for now you should be safe.

PS mike i guess now is a good time to tell you that there have been 8 witnessed couger sightings where we are going bear hunting eh LOL :p
