On Friday, June 17, a Colorado mother was able to rescue her child from a cougar that had attacked him, it will be interesting to hear
more of the details when more is known. I am wondering about the circumstances of the killing of the cougar however. It was killed
by officers who went to the mother and boy's house after the boy was taken to hospital, where they found the cougar still there.

Do cougars tend to stick around a likely kill spot rather than running away after an encounter with humans?

That is interesting. I personally dont know... but thinking about it, if it didnt feel threatened or pressured to leave the area, it would probably stick around to continue hunting, if it knew there was food there. Which would have made it an extreme hazard to the area... obviously. so IMHO the officers probably did the right thing... Animals that have made it a habit to hunt humans in the area close to their homes, would probably not respond correctly to relocation, It would probably just return to another area with people and wait for another child to pass by... I defer to the opinions of more experienced hunters.. I havent actually dealt with cougars in my hunting experience. Just my 2 cents.

While living in the Pacific Northwest it was determined that cougars were encroaching on the expanding new subdivision properties. I think maybe they had that backwards.

Good point! Cougars may simply be taking their habitat as they find it, no need to run away after an encounter with prey that has not previously hurt them.

Not a cougar when they're in their thirties. Just another horny woman with low standards.;)

The supposed definition of "cougar" is a woman pursuing a man 10 or more years younger... so one might be in her 30's... although that is not the usual picture that is conjured by the word.

Some of yewse with yer vast experteesth, well, have yew bin cougarr'd?

Yes, tell us your experience of being cougared, but not the older female kind, lots of us have seen a friend or two get taken by that kind.
I want to know about the other kind of cougars, especially those that stick around waiting for a second opportunity.

Welp, not having read the story from Colorado, but will add this much.
Cougar may have been a young one recently ran off from the Mother.
Young cougar was hungry and tried to make lunch/dinner or just a plain meal outta said young lad.
Obviously wasnt successful, but was/is hungry enough to stick around and see what else maybe around.
Maybe a young dog or stray cat possible items for the menu.
LEO or C/O arrived and tracked said cougar ...located a likely cougar and shot it thinking they where taking care of the problem.
Who knows maybe there is another cougar in the hood maybe not.
Either way the cat was at the top of the food chain till the guy with the gun arrived and dealt te final blow to the food chain theory.
Plausible??

Good insights, Rob! An update said that the officers shot a two year old cougar and are tracking another because they are not sure if they
got the right one. I guess a two year old cougar would not have its act together enough to stop a woman from taking the meal away, apparently
the mother was hardly injured while the boy is still in hospital. Still, it takes incredible bravery to fight off any cougar, that mother is incredible.

I remember as a kid visiting my relatives at Vedder Crossing in BC and every night hearing this cougar screaming. Seen a few around Nanton Alberta and never heard them scream again.

Ten years ago or so I had my son in the same tree stand overlooking a spring bear bait, when a herd of mule deer came under our tree and moved off down the valley.Less than a minute after the last doe left a cougar started screaming within 50 yards of us, for like over 20 minutes, with another answering a mile or so away. This continued until it was too dark to see and we had to leave. Thought I was finally going to get to see a cougar in the wild but never saw them.It makes the hairs on your neck stand up.Perhaps it killed one of the deer and was calling to the other cat ?
