Cougars introduced in Southern Ontario?

I live south of Peterborough 15km from Lake Ontario on a farm. I heard today that some trail cameras in the area have been picking up cougar chasing deer, etc. The rumour has it that there have been several sightings as well, and that landowner inquiries to the MNR have gotten an unofficial "we may have introduced them for predator control, but officially they've just moved into the area."

Now, it's totally possible this is BS, but I wondered if anyone has heard or seen anything, or can shed some more official light on the matter.
 
Wheww, there is finally photographic evidence, now we can put this one to rest. :rolleyes: I trust these trail camera pics will be available shortly???

Now MNR can explain itself, like where did they find all these extra cougars and the dollars to move them.
 
Then us folks in Ont will have a "What is the Best Cougar Defence Gun" thread. There will be little agreement, besides the fact that anything with less than 4000 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards won't save your live.
 
Is this some kind of ongoing rumour, or is something actually happening? I know a lot of you guys are more aware of these issues, so I thought I'd ask.
 
There have been atleast a dozen cougar sightings/claims of attacks on livestock and domestic animals within the last year around where I live as well. I live just south of Owen Sound, ON

Seems like if they were introduced here that it is getting out of hand
 
my understanding is that a young cat will move up to 600 miles to find its own territory, only a matter of timm till you start seeing them. Takes a while for them to build up a breading population but with the deer overpopulation they are going to have easy pickings.

Its just been talked about on every forum going, of spottings here and there.

I do not doubt anyones word and would hope to see one myself, however there has not been one track, photographed, not one photo, and we all carry dig cams now, or not one trail cam confirmed in this Province, plus the MNR ( who I never take serious anyway) has not released any proof.

I too thought I seen one in the Fraserdale area back by the dams a while back, I had to look twice, and it was a big cat,,, was 75-80 yards away. My first thought I yeld to the drive Mnt Lion, we stopped and looked watched him for 10 min and thought 100% it was. we had time to get glass on him out the window, and I swear I seen a tail. But it was the largest Bob Cat I have ever seen. I guessed over 50 lbs well over.

I went home and fired up the lap top and did infact confirm, bob cat can be 1m long .5 to .7 m high and weight over 50 Lbs, gender dependant.

Second Big cat I seen was a large Lynx that made me look twice as well and it was a tall cat, as tall as it was long, and it was a good 30 lbs plus.

But that Bob got me good, it took me 10 min to convince myself it was not one of the big cats the colour was perfect, I just could not see the tail, but even this tail was 8-12 inches long not like a Lynx.

Thats my story and I am sticking too it.. My work takes me all over, I get to see neat things, and in remote areas..

I know a guy that said he shot at one last fall while deer hunting near Maxwell Ontario. My cousins chased one down a logging road on the quads about 4 years ago in the Redlake area while moose hunting. No doubt it was a cougar because they were 30 yards behind it and they said it turned on a dime and jumped 15 feet across a ditch into the woods.
 
Apparently there have been dozens of cougar sightings in Burford, a smaller town just west of Brantford.

I have never seen them though
 
I swear I seen a dead one when I was a kid. Only the front half was there when we saw it on the side of the river.

Where are these trial cam pics?
 
About 3 years ago now, my family and I were on our way to visit the inlaws in Kanata. In a field, not much more that 75 yards from the highway, my wife and I saw an adult with a young one walking through a field near Maxville, Ontario. Very cool to see.

I do live in the area, small country town called Princeton and the neighbor just on the other side of are field found a deer that was dragged up into a tree. Could this be cougar related? This was back 4 months ago.
He called the MNR about this and I guess what they told him was it was someones pet that they could not take care of and let it loose.
