I know this is a Ross bayonet and I am posting for a friend. Is there anything else I could tell him about this bayonet? Am I right in thinking that the blade is unaltered? What should I tell him what it is worth?

The bayonet is the early model meant for the 1905 rifle. It appears to have the original profile blade. The later model meant for the heavier barreled 1910 had an upangled cutting edge with a very sharp point. Those are the very genearl differences. Some of the early bayonets had their blades altered to the 1910 profile. Prices on the standard 1910 bayonet seem to hover around $150.00 to $200.00 at some US sources although occasionally cheaper price ranges have been reported. I would assume that an original 1905 bayonet with scabbard would be somewhat higher but I would only be guessing at the range there. Joe

Yes it is an early Ross bayonet for the Mk1 and Mk11(1905) rifles. All types of Ross bayonets were initially made with this blade type. The 1910 MK111 Bayonets that went over with The 1st Infantry Division in 1914 were eventually armourer sharpened as the original blades were thought not to be well designed for penetration.Bayonets with both types of blades are correct. Yours appears to be 1910 dated with the scabbard dated 1909.It would have saw service before the war with Militia units and undoubtedly was used for training troops for overseas as the Mk 11 rifles were extensively used in Canada with Depot Battalions.generally they are worth between 50-80 bucks with condition and unit marks escalating the value from there. Hope this Helps...cheers,LASTMAG
