counting points - where is the dividing line?

based on the descriptions people give for a deer's rack, where is the dividing line between calling a 5x5 whitetail a 5 point or a 10 point?

is is basically only where mule deer range that all points aren't counted? or is the dividing line further east than that?

seems like in my area (south eastern bc) the points on a whitetail are only counted on one side (brow tine included) and on a muley, one side is counted without the browtine. same with elk, only points on one side are counted.

And just to throw a wrench into things, I don't count the brow tines on either Whitetails, or Mulies.

So a 10 point or 5 point, however you look at it, I count as a 4 point. If one side has more, then I'll call it a 4 by 3 or 5 by 4 or whatever the combination is.

As to the dividing line where a deer stops being a 10 point and starts becoming a 5 (or 4) point is, I have no idea.

Maybe cause the western deer are so much higher quality than the eastern ones, they count all the points they can in the east to try and make their deer sound bigger. LOL :D :dancingbanana: :p

That very well may be true and there seems to be alot more deer out west than here. I only saw four deer this year in a 1 month hunt season.

Seems to me that Sask and Alta have the best deer hunting in Canada.

Jeeze....that is low. I took my Nephews out for a drive one afternoon on Thanksgiving weekend, looking for grouse, so they could see what this hunting stuff was all about.

On our trip, (3-4 hours) we saw 11 Mule Deer, and 5 Whitetails. This was just a drive on an old logging road, not in a secret honey hole of some sort.

I had no idea that the numbers were that low over there.

I got skunked last year and a smallish buck yesterday. :)

I saw 26 deer between 6:45 am and 7:45 am last Thursday. All mulies, one 4 point ( too far away for me to take a honest shot) at least 6 one and two point bucks and does/fawns galore. Could have been more bucks but I didn't make any others out.

I'm with Chuck403 on the counting - no brow tines counted on either species and we say either 'a four pointer' or a '5x5' or whatever (unless it is a yearling whitetail with a main branch, brow tine and a true point - although one really tends to only talk about antler size for mature deer for some reason).

Points are all something substantial unless you've got a NT. Someone would probably laugh if you were trying to say you'd shot a 5x5 if the 5th points were 1 1/8"... B&C and the coffee table are two different things.

However, we don't really say a '2x2' or a 'two pointer', they are always a 'forkhorn' or a 'forker', and again usually only when talking about mature deer, which is where you'll quite often hear 'a big forkhorn' or some such (and all big forkers are invariably mulies).

I'd never seen a 'spike' buck until I moved out into the west country here and it seems to be the norm for most yearlings. In the eastern part of the province where I grew up I had seen one whitetail that was a forkhorn and I shot it to help the gene pool out.

But I have no answer to your original question about the geographical line...

We unfortunates in Ontario use the total point count, but I have friends from Manitoba and West who all use the "Western Count" as in 5X5. So i would say from Manitoba west

Thats true..... But when I come back from a day of hunting, it's great to talk about that giant 10 point (or whatever). Play everyone along for a while, then admit it's really a 5x5!!!!! LMAO all the time:runaway:
