County kills Sunday hunting proposal

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The debate about Sunday gun hunting in Prince Edward County will
continue into the new year. After a hunting delegation faced the
planning services committee Tuesday, councillors on the committee
deferred the decision until January that would have allowed gun hunters
to roam the county's forests on the traditional day of rest.

"I'm disappointed," said Greg Farrant, who appeared as a delegation as
government relations and communications manager with the Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). "Some of the arguments I heard
were familiar, but I respect the councillors, who are obviously
representing hunters and non-hunters."

Both factions were there for the discussion, including Monica Alyea,
councillor for South Marysburgh, who voiced the dissent of some of her
constituents. Alyea said she chooses Sundays to canoe and kayak because
it is one day of the week where there is not gunfire in the distance.

"When I walk out and hear guns, I know that's a day I'm not going to be
out on the water. But I know on Sunday, I can go out," she said. "It's
the perception of safety, and people need to know there's one day they
can go out and know for their children or grandchildren and themselves
that there are no guns."

Sixty-seven municipalities have voted to allow Sunday gun hunting, but
it should be up to 100 by the spring hunting season, said Farrant.

Currently, every municipality in Hastings County except Bancroft and
Wollaston have voted to allow it. Farrant has visited 34 municipalities
since March asking them to consider it. With deer hunting only two weeks
long for those who use guns, he said, an extra weekend day is important
to families who hunt.

Farrant said the committee could have approved it, even with an election
next month. It is a decision with no financial implications, he said, so
it is not bound by the "lame duck council" dynamic.

Kelly Baverstock of Picton appeared before the committee with a petition
of 328 signatures in favour of Sunday gun hunting.

When the ban on Sunday hunting was introduced, she said, no stores were
open on Sunday and everyone honoured the day of rest. Times have
changed.

But Jim Moore, a bow hunter and farmer near Picton, agreed he would like
one day with no gunfire. Bow hunters have a longer shooting season and
can already hunt on Sundays.

"It's not the local hunters, it's the people coming from the city," he
said. "It's nice to live in a rural area and be able to get up one day a
week and say 'today, we don't have to tolerate it.'"

Farrant said the safety issue is based on perception, not reality.

"Some of the perceptions out there are blatantly wrong," he said.

Jim Moore better get his head out of the sand and start speaking UP for other hunters rather than partially siding with the ANTI's... Just another case of canadian hunters NOT standing up for other hunters interest...

Yup, Jim Moore should take a long jump off a short pier. What an a$$hat!!

This Bull$hit of Sunday being a "day of rest" is loooong gone!! It left with multi-culturalism, political correctedness and every f**king mall and business open to the public on Sundays!

It's no longer the "day of rest" and if it is, then close shop on everything.

A message to Jim, maybe you're a hunter, but you're definately only out for yourself. I hope you get kicked in the nads by a trophy buck!!

i agree with this dude. u guys dont understand that in highly populated areas its a huge pita to bow hunt deer when there are people walking around with their shotguns shooting small game and such. sunday is the ONLY day that bowhunters can get out without having gunshots ruin a hunt.

i am all for sunday hunting for waterfowl though. ;)

the safety thing is BS if you ask me. the only reason i dont want sunday hunting in my area (Brant) is due to the simple fact thats its the one and only day where gunshots wont be heard in the bush. luckily it isnt allowed here yet.

Living in a rural area that is without firearms restrictions, allows hunting and is less than an hour's drive from 3 large urban areas this opinion doesn't come as a surprise to me even from another hunter.

It's not the Jim Moores that hurt us. It's the slob hunters from the cities who run roughshod over rural areas that do us the real damage. Having twice lobbied my local council in opposition to attempts to put firearms and/or hunting restrictions in place it doesn't bother me that our councillors have not lifted the Sunday hunting ban. In fact, I'm quite glad they haven't.

It's whatever suits your fancy, apparently.

Unfortunately, you divide us all when you talk about restricting others from a day you can already hunt. Second, as was pointed out already, bowhunters have a LONGER season - seems like advantage enough - but you still don't want us to hunt with rifles on Sundays.

Sunday hunting is long overdue. In SK we can't hunt on Sundays with a bow, muzzleloader, shotgun, or rifle.

When I hear these arguments it just reminds me of the rifleowners hanging the handgun owners out to dry. Same ####, different pile.:(

listen pal, i live in southwestern ontario where you arent allowed to rifle hunt for deer. there is 2 seperate times for shotgunning deer that last 5 days each season, monday to friday for a total of 10 days each season. even if sunday gun hunting is permitted around here guess what. that still means no waterfowl hunting on sundays and the shotgun hunters still wont be able to hunt deer on sundays with their shotguns.

so, allowing sunday gun hunting in SW ontario would only allow small game hunters to actually hunt an extra day. the main small game people hunt in sw ontario is rabbit (which is open for 45 days LONGER than deer season) and grouse (open for 15 days LONGER than deer).

so, sunday gun hunting isnt needed in this area. bowhunters here get 12 days each season where they can be sure nobody will be walking around blasting small game.

maybe in your area sunday gun hunting will be great but in my area it wont so im against it. if you want something done about it dont ##### to me go ##### to those who can actually change the rules;)
