hey guys, i just got my sks, and it's my first rifle so forgive the noob question, but will the trigger operate if the rifle is unloaded?

what's happening is that there's maybe 2mm of play before the trigger stops completely, as though there's something mechanical blocking it (no, it's not the safety ;P ). and i'm a strapping man so i know it's not having the forearm strength to draw the trigger.

i haven't taken the rifle apart yet, but has anyone else run into this issue or know what i should look for when i pull the trigger assembly out?

also: what parts of this rifle should be lubricated, and what parts should remain dry (for shooting)

My SKS will fire empty without a problem. Has it been completely cleaned of cosmoline? Every new SKS I've seen has been practically dripping with the stuff and a complete disassembly was required to get it clean.

got it all figured out. a full strip and cleaning seemed to do the trick. luckily there was no cosmoline, just plenty of oil.

Definitely, the gas system and firing-pin should be kept as dry as possible.

For the firing-pin, you can have a fine FILM of oil, but the gas system must be COMPLETELY dry.

Goes for ALL gas-operated firearms.

You kow some 1 should start a chrome plating service for these firing pins. Now that would be awsome!
