Cool shots. I remember being paranoid of Australia's numerous deadly snakes when I visited. Do you ever run across snakes hunting or is it largely an overblown concern (kind of like people in Canada being too afraid of bears to venture into the woods)?
Thats a real good Question mate! Thanks for Asking.
We sure do have the deadly snakes at the back door, not uncommon to have brown snake or red belly & black snakes aswell as Toger snakes in around the house yard, esppecially where i live..
So no doubt the bush is littered with Snakes! ONLY in the summer time though (still 8 months or so) as autumn or spring can be reasonably dry and warm ...
Not too many hunters are interested in Summer hunting for the Snake factor excuse or the risk of snake bite for their Dog... OK grest this allows most deer to settle right back down after a winter onslaught... an our local hunting spots get good again!
I dont go running thru the bush, i will walk along game trails (snakes love them too) and avoid long or dense scrub or areas around water beit creekside or a dam..
I wear Canvas backed Gaitors year round anywho and spend most time hunting Farm Fringe as the fields thin out along the bush edge in summer and the deer come out for water / feed anyway.
Ive come across about 5-7 snakes whilst hunting on foot, of you go slow an watch where you step (as you do when stalking proper slow) It seems to be fine regarding you take a few risks here an there ... it might be crossong waist high grass to cut back to a track or go down thru and along a creek breifly...
The high country is a real home for them but it takes a while for them to pop out after the winter an when they do , seem to mope around baskin for sun.
Summer sit and waits can have their downfalls... especially if you didnt check your surroundings proper as they pop up from rocks an small holes.
So end of March theu are still out and about but slowing down and looking for hibernation holes an eatin what they can.. abundance of water at present from a wet spring n early summmer so alot of frogs on the menu ...and mice.
Cheers mate from Lake Jindabyne
