Cool shots. I remember being paranoid of Australia's numerous deadly snakes when I visited. Do you ever run across snakes hunting or is it largely an overblown concern (kind of like people in Canada being too afraid of bears to venture into the woods)?

Thats a real good Question mate! Thanks for Asking.

We sure do have the deadly snakes at the back door, not uncommon to have brown snake or red belly & black snakes aswell as Toger snakes in around the house yard, esppecially where i live..
So no doubt the bush is littered with Snakes! ONLY in the summer time though (still 8 months or so) as autumn or spring can be reasonably dry and warm ...
Not too many hunters are interested in Summer hunting for the Snake factor excuse or the risk of snake bite for their Dog... OK grest this allows most deer to settle right back down after a winter onslaught... an our local hunting spots get good again!
I dont go running thru the bush, i will walk along game trails (snakes love them too) and avoid long or dense scrub or areas around water beit creekside or a dam..
I wear Canvas backed Gaitors year round anywho and spend most time hunting Farm Fringe as the fields thin out along the bush edge in summer and the deer come out for water / feed anyway.

Ive come across about 5-7 snakes whilst hunting on foot, of you go slow an watch where you step (as you do when stalking proper slow) It seems to be fine regarding you take a few risks here an there ... it might be crossong waist high grass to cut back to a track or go down thru and along a creek breifly...

The high country is a real home for them but it takes a while for them to pop out after the winter an when they do , seem to mope around baskin for sun.

Summer sit and waits can have their downfalls... especially if you didnt check your surroundings proper as they pop up from rocks an small holes.

So end of March theu are still out and about but slowing down and looking for hibernation holes an eatin what they can.. abundance of water at present from a wet spring n early summmer so alot of frogs on the menu ...and mice.

Cheers mate from Lake Jindabyne

Ahh, the Man form Snowy River ;)
I was interested in the question as well and thought I might add what about those nasty arachnids (Spiders) ?
When I was down under and staying in Adelaide I was warned about snakes in the garden as they had a few sightings of a Big Eastern Brown Snake in the yard...
The home owners where not to concerned about it, but did warn us.
Then there was the funnel web spider story, buts thats for another time ...
Thanks for sharing WL.

less people in the wood is always good ... bear is a good excuse too

Not too much thought toward spiders, try an steer clear of webs in trees an stuff, keep your Swag (camp bed) free of them an you'l be right.

Few types ya dont wana find is like the redback white tip an prpbly couple others..

However it doesnt deter or stop people heading bush like the Snakes do!

You guys know who to talk too RE fallow deer hunting .. we are on them this w.e hoping for Bucks

I'd rather tangle with a Grizzly than deal with those snakes they have down there.

I too would take grizzly country any day of the week over watching for snakes.

You mentioned people stay out the woods due to snakes - is that common amongst the Aussies?

I always thought it was so strange Australia had tonnes of venomous snakes and a short flight across the Tasman New Zealand has none. I think that's one of the reason I preferred NZ as I could tramp anywhere and not be concerned.

Yep how weird is that Fact re: ' Across the Ditch' aka the Tasman and you can get blind drunk stumble outside and just pass out and be at ease with the only encounter you might have is if a Possum wants to curl up next too you an chew on ya Toe..

Yep very common for big bad Hunters to 'eff the bush too many snakes this time of year' , national Anthem mate.. ffs.
Whereas the bush walkers get out and about in the Tops as the snow is gone good temps etc. You see alot of pictires of snakes via bush walk forums than pics of summer deer on the huntin forum lol.

You just gota be Somewhat Aware but like all creatures You feel their presence i rekon..

Now a Grizzly Bear....
Ive not seen one act like a bear does in its own enviroment before, the initial thought of a Grizzly bear on the loose in North East Victoria would kind of Alarm me! Although it would be Easy to get on hes trail and read hes Sign!! Would only be a few Dairy cows go missin n found in the bushline under a pile of raked up grass !

Which reminds me, Have you Guys heard of the 'Elusive Black Panther' that the Roumers echo along Australias East Coast?
An escapee when the Zoo was in Towns and the Cart Rolled over...

$10k bounty for it in Certain part of Victoria lol

Cheers

Id rekon a Big Buck would be 120kilos or so, and the Doe around 60-70kg ....at a bit of a rough estimate as to how many bags of cement :)

Maybe smaller? Id very much say whitetail avg class..
