Below are 3 images of a shotgun that i was gifted from my father.. what i would like to know is what is the best type of shell to use in it.. Lead or steal.. (for bird hunting) and also what is the switch on the bottom that Shows S or R Setting. I don't know a lot about shotguns and want to make sure that I'm not going to be damaging the barrel etc by using the wrong type of shell. What do you guys recommend i use to keep my gun in great condition. Hopefully you can see some of the marking in the pictures i provided. Any Advice and information would be greatly appreciated.

well i ended up searching and finding the manual and answer.. for the S or R but would still like some advice as to what to put through the gun.

"Turning a ring around the receiver end of the magazine tube activates the cutoff. When the index line on the cutoff ring is rotated to align with a letter R stamped in the receiver, the cutoff is disengaged, and the gun feeds from the magazine as a repeater. When the index mark is aligned with the letter S, the magazine cutoff is engaged and the shell carrier deactivated. Shells to not feed from the magazine, and the carrier arms are held at the top of the receiver where they do not interfere with loading the gun with action open. The primary purpose of this feature is to allow changing the shell in the chamber while retaining those in the magazine."

It appears you have one my coveted shotguns, a BPS Trap gun. The question then begs are you shooting 16yrd ATA Trap or Handicap Trap? 16yrd I recommend 1oz #8 @ 1200fps through the Imp.Modified choke, Handicap 1 1/8Oz of #8 or #7 1/2 at the same speed through the Full Choke.

The switch is a magazine cut-off which I believe was exclusive to some of the trap models, which would be consistent with what Maritime has said. "S" to make the gun function as a single shot and "R" to make it a repeater.

Edit: Never mind, Ryan has already thoroughly covered it.

It was on all the early bps gun field model as well . If it does not have screw in chokes and has a full choke bll then u can not shoot steel through it . When post for info u should really post make and model
