Cowboy Action ammo, rookie question

Lead can be splashed back and would be a bigger problem if velocity was increased, another problem is damage to steel reactive targets.

The damage is the BIG problem. Splash is a pain in the butt for sure.

Why the restricted velocity?

I think this is due to the above points about splash, and damaging the targets but may be due to also trying to get the power to what it would have been like back in those times.

Most clubs follow SASS rules as a standard, even if they are not affiliated with SASS. Max velocity for handgun is 1,000 fps & the max velocity for rifle is 1,400 fps.

Most shooters will shoot the same ammo in both the revolvers and the rifles so about 800fps give or take 50fps.

Yes but if your gamey, you can use 2 loads. For example my .44 Magnum handgun loves W231 for max accuracy, my Marlin loves Unique for max accuracy. Neither like the other for best accuracy, but if I'm shooting a stage on those rare instances where I'll have to take down a 35 lb pepper popper should I shoot my 650 fps normal pistol load in my Vaquero or the rifle load in my Vaquero that will give me 940 fps?

Garand, there are a few shooters at our club using 38's and the moment they see any targets that have to be knocked down they are scrambling for their boxxes of "hotter" ammo.... I shoot BP equivalent loads in my 45's so worrying about knockdowns not going over is never an issue for me!

I shoot .45Colt in my revolvers and my rifle.
250 bullets and 5.5 grains of Trail Boss.
It's more fun than shooting mouse phart loads or wondering if the bullet will actually reach the target.
I've watched some shooters argue about their loads when they couldn't get a knockdown. I have a .22 revolver that will knockdown the targets in question, usually ending the arguement.

Well stated.

I remember a match, last summer, where people shooting "underpowered" .38 argued that the knockdown were not correctly setted. I shot at the very same targets a few minutes after with a .36 cap'n'ball, using 20 gr of goex... All the target that were hit went down.

Makes you wonder where the "spirit of the game" is gone if you shoot loads weaker than a percussion .36 in a full sized revolver ?

Very true Fred.
I recall some shooter's loads so weak that I thought they had fired a squib.
But, I guess with the big money prizes we offer, any advantage is worth it to some.

The battle between 38's and 45's has been going on since I can't remember, mostly in a good natured banter between friends. I shoot 45's, so I never encountered the dreaded knockdown problem, unless I missed! I did read an article in the SASS Chronicle (2008) where Holy Terror ( top Female shooter) described packing up for a match and shipping 3 different types of ammo. She did indicate being prepared for knockdown targets. This would tell those who read this article, this is an accepted practice. I don't agree with it and am voicing my humble opinion. At one time SASS had a minimum requirement of 650 ft/sec. and later discontinued this rule. Too hard to regulate and if someone won a match, the cry went up about using puff loads. This scenario existed in our club, but for a very short time! We slowly sarted converting more and more targets to knockdowns. The bickering went away, if the target didn't go down, it was a miss, no discussion about it. Sometimes actions speak louder than words and after a while the need for this age old argument is gone.
