Cowboy Action Shooting For Wife.....What Cal?

Hey all.

Looking to pick up a single action revolver for the wife. Wants to shoot cowboys......

What would be a good cal for the wife?

45 long colt
44-40
357

I am thinking that a 357 would be good because you can run 38s through it.

We would probably stick with the shorter length barrels. Maybe up to 5.5 inches.

My one buddies wife uses 38 Special and another uses 45 Colts.

I would set my wife up with 45 Colt's with 180gr or 200gr bullets @ 700fps with Universal Clays powder thaqt is if I could get her interested in CAS.

My choice of revolvers for her would be 2 s/s Ruger New Model Vaquero's with 4 5/8" barrels. Excellent balance to these guns with this barrel length.

Well.

The wife bought 2 Ruger Vaqueros in SS, 357 to shoot 38s. 4 5/8 barrels.

Any good places to buy holsters? Right handed with a cross draw.

I got my belt and holsters from Jack Blaeser at J-B Leather, Box 102, Strome Alberta, TOB 4HO (376-3553 FAX 376-3562). He generally has a table at FT Kusk, Canadian National Cowboy Action Shooting Championships. He has a good quality product that is reasonably priced.

He doesn't have a web site, but his work is first class. I have been using 1 or more of his belts and holsters for over 4 years now. They are great kit, its worth the time to send him a letter or give him a call.

HOWDY . Nice choice of guns . Go with two strong side holsters . The cross draws will only lead to issues especially with a new er shooter. Kirkpatrick leather of the USA look at there Long hunter line with the 1 1/2 inch drop.Women have special needs .Higher hips ,gotta get them guns hung low so they are not pulling up to there armpits to get the gun out.
Try a 140 grain bullet with min book load for shooting. Some spotters are deaf and blind when females shoot better then them.
Marlin carbine 18.5 inch barrel can be comfortable for ladies or a 20 inch ???No winchesters please.
" Magic springs by seven" will help out the stiff triggers on them rugers . We have tryed others but go back to the one by Seven .

Is CAS strong in Ontario?

HOWDY ; Two strong side holsters; both handgun have the butts towards the back, the left handgun is pulled with the Left hand and passed over to the right to be shot , then passed back to the left hand to be reholstered " the boarder shuffle" Do not bother with the cross draw holsters ,too munch dancing to sfatly pull the left gun with the right hand.wastes of time.
YES there is a match 3 or 4 per month with in 100 miles of Stony Creek year round.

Someday we will be back to stay in Ontario, but will hopefully be around London. The wife is concerned about leaving Alberta, not not getting to shoot CAS.
