Will cylinder bore work or does the gun need to be choked? I hope to get to a match this summer to check it out but in the meantime if a good deal comes my way on a shotgun I'd like to know what I'm looking for.

Anything will work that is tight & safe. Most shotguns used in this sport are shortened a considerable bit (they swing easier and have less interference from stage props) and chokes are seldom installed in the "open bore" cutoff end. Shotgun targets are short range and if they are "knock-downs" and the course/target stand is set properly they are easy to knock down. A lot of Shotgun targets are just "hit it" targets and if they even wiggle a bit it is counted as a hit.

Good question, when I started shooting Cowboy Action with a Winchester M97 I bought one where the previous owner had just sawn off 10" of the barrel and installed a bead sight. With non reactive targets this was no problem. The problem came when shooting a reactive target that weighed anywhere from 35-40 pounds at 15 to 18 yds. The shot just wiggled the target a bit then it laughed at me! I had a screw in choke installed and for all SASS matches I have no problem. Unfortunately not all clubs are SASS affiliated and set their targetry at longer distances. Problem is easily solved I added a full screw in choke to my shotgun. Depending on the match targetry distance determines whether I use the cylinder choke or the full choke. Changing chokes take 30 seconds and a quarter.

I use black powder loads and light trap loads out of an 18" barreled SXS with cylinder bores and have yet to have any problems so far. The clubs up here in the north use heavy targets at farther ranges than standard too.
