Iam looking for loads to use in my Marlin 94 and Ruger single action 5 1/2'' barrel. I want to use 158g SWC and RNFP bullets with W231 powder as I have alot of both. If possible I would like to use the same load in both guns.

There is no problem in using the same load in your rifle, if you plan to shoot .38 Specials in your rifle. The velocity will be slightly higher, but should be well within the limits. The only caveat is that you should chronograph the above starter load to make sure that it is actually going that fast. In some pistols the loads could be much slower, which could result in stuck bullets in your rifle.
The chronograph is your best friend when you are working with starting loads at these velocities.
If you want to shoot them slower, you are on your own.

Al-Sway is onto something.
In my GP100, 16.6gr W296 is well below published velocities. Same load in a Marlin 1894c is also slow. Some say I could go as far as 17.5gr with W296. Not saying you should but it worked for me :D
Work up your load!

Good load - as mentionned, it is an absolute minimum, so use caution.

For Bullseye shooting I use 3.0 grs of Win231 with a 148gr HBWC - I won't budge from that load.

Cowboy loads are just cast bullet target loads. You will have to work up a separate load for your rifle and revolver. Chances of finding one load that shoots well out both are slim, but you might get lucky.
