Hi folks,

just wondering what restrictions there are for cowboy action shoots. For example, is it mandatory to use a single action revolver, or can you use a DA modern revolver (686 +)??

Rifles are levers, but do they have to be 45 long colt or can you have a 357 modern Winchester lever??

Any help would be appreciated.

Most Cowboy shoots/clubs stipulate "S.Aa only" but some small local outfits will let a shooter use "what he brung but only fired single action" type of thing to try the sport out with the understanding that "proper gear will be forthcoming. More often than not you will be provided with the "correct" guns on loan complete with ammo by someone there rather than use you D A so you get the real feel for the sport.

.357 mag, .38 sp, 44 mag, 32-20 are all completely lever-gun legal to use in the sport.

For get Wild Bunch that is a different game.
Yes single action revolvers and pistol cal. lever rifle, double shotgun with extractors. 20 or 16 or 12 gauge shotgun. Cal 32 or larger, most use 38 spl, get round nose flat point lead only bullets, mainly for the cycling of the rifle.

Most CAS clubs are not SASS(Single Action Shooting Society) affiliated, but all pay lip service to their rules. Download the SASS shooters manual and see which categories require which specific firearms. Cowboy action shooters are probably the most generous of all shooters across a wide number of disciplines, most will lend you guns and ammo for a match or 2, just don't abuse their good will. A lot of clubs will not allow modern double action revolvers and don't be upset, Cowboy Action shooters spend in some cases thousands of dollars to shoot in that discipline. If they wanted to shoot modern pistols, they would have bought them. On top of that generally store bought factory ammunition generally exceeds the muzzle velocity limitations that are on steel targets for Cowboy action shooting.
