Coyote bait question

I've never baited coyotes before but I made something up today that I hope will work. A buddy of mine gave me some deer scraps so I put them in pails and added water to make some tasty treats for the little buggers. There is a dairy barn near here and they seem to go by fairly often. Apparently the farmer wants someone to shoot the coyotes and he has some bail stacks on the outer edge of the property I could use. I figured I would put the bait out about a hundred yards and sit on one of the stacks. Should I put the bait out all at once or just use a pail or two a week?

I found the ultimate bait pile 2 days ago while hunting coyotes. I was walking along a river following a real heavily used trail on the ice when I saw something black on the ice. Turns out a cow must have walked out on thin ice and broke through then froze into the ice. Coyotes have just started eating him and I have plans on sitting in the near by bushes with a shotgun and some buckshot :D

P.S that bait should work well, try and freeze it into the dirt Ive done that with deer parts and coyotes will work the bait for weeks.

They will hit it when they are hungry you want to make your bait difficult enough that it cannot be dragged off but not so difficult that its just not worth it to them. Freezing intertwined scraps together will make em work for it freezing in a chain wich can be used to tie to a stake more so also gets em used to the smell of steel and said complacency can be exploited by later tying some legholds to the same stake. To much water and only the mangy and weakest hunters will be coming in.
 
Don't bother calling and baiting together, rarely works.
Get down wind and follow the advice above. Problem is, the yotes will likely come at night but if you can set up your bait in a somewhat covered area but with enough openess for you to shoot, it might help.

If you can find a dead pig (and it is leagal in your province) Coyotes far prefer pork to beef, I have seen dead cows last for months in a field but ppigs are usually eaten within a few days.

HOLY COW!

You are making this sound WAY too hard. Don't outthink yourself.

Creep into a good position with the wind in your face. Sit tight, blow your call for 15 minutes. No dice? Wait 5-10 minutes, move to the next position and try again.

After enough failures and some victories you will figure out what works (both in the call method and choosen position)

Forget the dead animals as bait, you don't need them. A good call and some stalking skills will work....at least they worked for me.

I couldn't agree more... I used to try the bait... not worth it unless you set it up somewhere you can just "drive by" Calling for a few minutes and waiting is the way to go.
I used to call only for about 5 minutes and then leave. most coyotes will show up immediately but I have had many missed opportunities by calling for a couple of minutes and then packing up only to see a coyotes ass or tracks in front of me!

Been there done that way too many times.

I have dropped more than a few 'dogs' just by sitting and doing nothing after a 15 minute calling session.

My best advice when calling coyotes: if in doubt shut up, sit still, watch and wait.
 
baiting yoddlers

If its smacked on the highway by my place its on the bait pile, also all the other critters from trapping, 2 years ago I had 7 moose road kill, that lasted 3weeks, get the wires up and put the gun away, I usually haul in around 30 dogs off of a good station plus the odd lynx or wolverine. Anchor your bait if you can. If I do the frozen thing like you did I freeze a cheap piece of Nylon Roap into the goo so as to anchor, also use my tobbogan with another cheap tarp in for for goo collecting when its froze up theres pret near a 500lbs block of frozen splooge. Good luck and good hunting.

Yote came to deer scrapes

I threw out some deer scrapes last boxing day about 10am. Our dog BO was out smelling around it and I called her back. this was about noon.

At 4:30 pm my wife hollered "something chased Bo up to the doorstep". I looked out and saw the yote just going in the woods. This was about 150 yds out. I grabbed the .223 and went out and waited. After 20 minutes (it was almost dark), the yote came back out across the field and I took a shot. It went in circles and then bolted for the woods. found it about about 150 yds in, shot through the middle.

So, baiting does work, they'll come out right at dark, you can see them on the snow real good. they are used to eating deer and IMO is better than cow or something they ar'nt used to eating. I can post some pics but they are on my laptop which is home. I do it tonight.

I breasted out 3 ducks and three grouse last week, through the bodies in field off the side of a dirt road around 9 am, went back that afternoon there was crow tracks, coyote and fox and a whole bunch of feathers.
The coyote around here are not used to eating deer and possibly have some experience with cows, but we also dumped a bout 20 lbs of old moose meat in a field, it was gobbled pretty quickly.
 
remember to check the regs! you cannot use any deer product ie bones scraps hide or road kill as bait in Alberta. Check your prov. I was out yesterday & got 3 alos have a couple of dead cows that i will check today. I like to stay back 75-100 yd to keep bait clear of activity. For couote controll a trapers licence & snairs is the way to go. for me, much faster than traps. hope this helps.
