Just wondering what works well for a Coyote call and where to buy them...do any of the dealers on this site sell them? Looking to bash a few this winter.
Thanks

Both S.I.R.(Cabela's) and Wholesale Sports have an assortment of calls, including rabbit-in-distress calls.

I bought a cheap one (rabbit in distress) with a cassette tape from WSS here in Calgary. Listened to the tape and practiced calling on the long drive back to the farm in SK. Then went out the following monday and called in 3 coyotes.

I believe it was pure beginners luck on my part but it was really fun to be fully camouflaged and watch them trot towards me. I frightened the pair that first came as they came from behind and in moving my rifle they spotted me. I kept calling and another came and I shot him at about 12 yards. Like I say I think it was pure luck but then all hunting involves a bit of luck.

I haven't had time to try it again, (Maybe this Christmas as I will be back for 2 weeks).

I really liked the cassette tape, it played out the different tones and nuances that I would never have guessed and in the 12 hr drive I had plenty of time to practice.

If nothing else it is fun to tease the dog with sounds of a dying rabbit

I have three calls, an open reed distress, variable pitch and a horn, mostly a mail order thing for me, some of the calls get pretty expensive as well.

There is a nice Johnny Stewart package on the market. Includes a vari-pitch call and a DVD. Primos also has a howler with a DVD on the market. Calling Coyotes is a skill I'm trying to pick up. Good luck to you.

I've bought all my calls from the usual outdoor stores (WSS, SIR, Russels) but i would really love to get my hands on some custom made calls. If anyone knows someone who sells these, drop me a PM and let me know.

Coyote Call

My homemade electronic call works great and cost less than $25.00 Here's how I did it. Purchase a used CD/tape "boom box" (garage sale specials are fine) that will work on batteries; most will. Google for Varmint Al's website to download free recordings with blank spaces to start. Transfer to CD or tape. This will also work with a MP3 boom box. Works great.

I started off with a Burnham Bros. calling kit that had a long range (closed reed) call, a close range (open reed) call and a 45rpm instructional record. Yup, a record (no CD's 35 years ago) Over the years the collection of hand calls & howlers I picked up here and there has grown quite a bit. Google is your friend as lot's of custom calls are available on-line nowadays.

Check out the Hand Calls subforum of Predator Masters. Lots of custom call makers there.

Thanks CV32, i take it there all American call makers? Hope i don't get dinged for custom fees. Seems its been happening to me a lot lately.

Nothing beats a call like a Foxpro or Minaska but they come at a steep price for most. Hand calls can be just as effective if you know how to use them properly.
I personally use both and find more enjoyment using hand calls but my success rate is lower. They usually bust me or my sounds are a bit off.
Redfrog is the CGN expert on calls and carries a full line of Foxpro products.
Good luck, nothing gets your heart racing like a predator coming to you thinking you're lunch.

Cheers!!

Check with Varmint Al's site. He has some real good info about building your own call. If you can't get the amplifier from Radio shack in the states you can do what I did and buy a set of battery powered speakers which contain a built in amplifier. Buy a cheap mp3 player, download the sound files from Al's site and upload them to the mp3, then play them through the battery powered speakers. They sound great and according to some people writing into Al this set up works well.

Gylar! I make a few. What part of SW Ontario are you from?
Open reed distress toned to a cottontail. The case is a 22/284 for size comparison.

tons of custom calls on there. You can't go wrong with them. I have 2 custom howlers made out of cow horn that came from a big time coyote hunter/caller from texas. The craftmenship of this thing is awesome, I got 2 of them, one sounds like a male and ones the female. Called in 4 coyotes with them since last winter. I can get them to answer all the time at night just by stepping outside of a bit. give me a pm and i'll give you his website
