Coyote Calls

Hey - I'm looking at picking up some mouth calls for coyote hunting. One of the landowners where we hunt deer had coyotes up around his barn chasing his beef cattle so they're getting pretty bold.

I have done some coyote hunting with my brother & some good friends with the hounds but just wanted to be able to slip out by myself for a few hours when time allows.

Not much in stock locally so I was going to order some online. Some of the most popular ones in the various predator hunting forums I'm considering were the Primos double cottontail call, their raspy coaxer predator call, their female whimper call, the Kluk do it all predator & the Haydel's TAC predator call. Wondering if there's anything else you would recommend or consider a must have when starting out. Tried to look it up here but haven't quite got the search function figured out on the updated platform .

Lads also mentioned that they seemed to prefer custom calls to the mass produced as each one is unique. The reasoning being in areas where there are lots of hunters they coyotes get wary hearing the same calls over & over. Just wondering if there's anyone in Canada making custom calls - google wasn't much help.

Thanks in advance
Tom

I’ve had great success with the Johnny Stewart PC-1 variable pitch call- I can do everything from jackrabbit and cottontail distress to kiyi/pup yip, to crows and chicken clucks on it. It’s got a rubber bite-down button that varies tone, it’s plenty loud, and even if it freezes up it thaws in seconds with a couple good breaths.

Easily the best $15 I’ve spent on coyote hunting.

Usually the open reed style does not freeze up as the johny style ( one of my favorite but I used to go through 3 a yr as reeds break up). Try get few different styles and maybe include a howler into mix as helps if they get educated in an area

Lol I feel like tich is summoning me like some fairy tale creature in a Disney movie *POOF* "it. Is I the coyote call maker!"
But yes I make coyote calls and can help you figure out what you need. Trophycountrycalls.ca is my website but I'm also on pretty much every social media outlet under trophycountrycalls if you prefer that.
Open reeds vary from maker to maker though most use the same style and size of call. Closed reeds no matter what the company is are almost all using the exact same internals so lots of closed reed selection comes down to what you like size and looks wise.

I use Ed Sceery calls mostly, but there are lots of good calls available. I use an open reed mostly, but have a couple dozen others. I would look to a good open reed, a higher pitch cottontail, a raspy hare/jack, and a mouse squeaker... that will cover most of the bases.

Has anybody tried an electronic call, I was thinking of setting one up in a field so I could sit back a hundred yards in the tree line with my muzzleloader.

Thanks for all the quick replies & advice fellas.

I like the idea of the variable pitch calls so you won't need to pack as many in or out to have a variety of sounds.

Yotarunner - I'll shoot you a message on your website about the calls after Xmas - I'm sure they work as good as they look!

And yes maifire we do have that one local clown that wanders through everyone's farms without permission so I'll keep an eye open for him.
And the dogs.

I just made a YouTube video on handcalls that helps showcase all the sounds you can make. Il make a thread here soon and post it up
