There is a natural funnel point along a ridge near me where an aspen grove narrows to about 200 yards. The deer, moose and coyotes all travel along the ridge and when they get to the funnel they invariably stay almost exactly dead center. A great place for an ambush.
So this guy was trotting along the trail just a little after 8am when I spotted him at about 100 yards through the trees. Too thick for a shot so I just waited, hoping he would make his way towards me. About 10 minutes later he emerged from behind a little thicket about 60 yards away.
He stopped to smell and then mark his territory for the last time. Bang, twitch, flop. Neck shot and exit wound. Young male. Nice fur.
The Sako Finnfire in 17HMR is earning its keep this fall and those little Hornady 17gr Varmint Express pills certainly do the trick.
