Silversnipe and I went out for a coyote hunt this morning and we scored. It took our third set before we had not one but two show up. Our first setup of the day looked to be the most promising one we had lined up, but after calling (beginning at first light) for over 40 minutes we decided to move on to the next location. We called this 2nd place for 20 mins or so before moving on to our last set of the day for us. We arrived just after 9 am and setup 170 yds across watching a large bush. I would watch the right hand corner and Siversnipe had the middle and left side covered. We called for about 5 minutes with no takers, the wind shifted and was blowing toward the bush a little more than I liked so visions of a coyote coming from my end seemed slim…. I kept an out over my shoulder just incase something came from behind and sure enough about the 8 min mark I glance over my shoulder to see two coyotes in the open field. They must have come from the bush way in the back or across the road. One coyote kept its distance, seemed skittish wouldn’t come closer. The other coyote came in and then either it saw me move or wanted to get a wind check started moving from right to left. I wolfed him to stop and took him at 120yds. At the shot the other coyote (170 yds out) turned on the after burners. We screamed out trying to get him to stop but no luck. We let off a few shots at him as he was running hard but missed him….Here are a few pictures to go with the story, hope you enjoy…

Nice set-up and good shooting! I'm about to head out this afternoon and change the game - going to try a turkey decoy and digital call...rabbit just isn't happening for some reason. Did these two succumb to a rabbit in distress?

Good job. I went out yesterday and slipped on the ice under the snow and went home and cleaned my rifle then re-sighted it in. Maybe I'll get out today.

Love the stories and the pics that along with them.

Judging by this particular story I am guessing that a cross or slightly quartering toward you wind is best?

I have not hunted Coyotes yet but have some custom calls that are itching to get out and any info, by those who obviously know what they are doing, is greatly appreciated.

Great job and a great read as well. I too am a huge fan of the pictures you post; it really lays out the details of the hunt perfectly for those of us who are a little less experienced at coyote hunting and thirsting for info. Well done.

Just like you said, I like the cross wind or slightly quarting to me.... and make sure I can see/shoot downwind incase they try to circle... good luck
