“Unlawfully abandoning the pelt of a coyote”...

That’s a new one for me... I know folks that hunt coyotes for population control around their properties, and leave them where they fall. Anyone run into this before?

All the time. I suspect those were the "warnings" issued. The FWCAct states it's illegal to abandon a "viable" pelt of value. Very, very rarely is a charge like that laid because there's so many variables for an accused to use as a defense, first and foremost being "value" (Coyote pelts are almost worthless unless absolutely pristine because there's such a glut). Second is "viability" which is really tough when all shot to he** or full of mange which is quite typical this time of year. Most Coyote hunting in southern Ontario (where I live) is done on farms for predator control protecting livestock. No matter what the Ontario Liberal bunny huggers say, that's still sacrosanct unless Ma Wynne wants to start coughing up mega millions to pay farmers for predation claims. There seems to be a concerted effort by the Liberals to curtail Coyote trapping and hunting by inventing restricted areas of the province, supposedly,to allow a hybrid breed they're calling The Algonquin Wolf to increase their numbers. The whole thing's a crock.

Interesting, I wasn't aware CO's used unmarked vehicles and plain clothes around here. Glad to hear though as poaching and illegal activities around here need to be reduced and I have heard from a few people that the MNRF was stepping up their game in this area for 2017/2018. Considering I went 15 years without being stopped and was finally checked 3 times last fall alone, I believe the rumors of increased enforcement to be true.

Considering the number of lazy slobs around here who find it necessary to dump meat, bones, and hides at access points only feet from the road, I would guess that's how the hunter(s) wasting coyote pelts were busted. These selfish pigs make us all look bad and on more than one occasion I have seen people taking pictures with angry looks on their faces. How hard is it to walk 50-100 yards off the road to toss the waste where nobody would even know it's even there?

Makes me glad I don't live in onterrible.

There's no regulation for Alberta which states it's illegal to waste furbearer pelts?

In MB if I shot a coyote with my trappers licence I have to follow the trappers guide which says I cant waste a usable fur. If I am helping a farmer with pest control I can leave it there.

I can’t help but think they were being reckless and got the book thrown at them, but has anyone on here ever been charged or wanted about leaving a viable pelt? Here in Alberta a resident can hunt coyote without a license if I’m reading the regs right so that’s not a thing here?

I don't need a small game license to shoot varmints at the farm. As for leaving a varmint pelt idk who would want one after a 30cal hole is made.

Next thing you know, well they'll register mouse traps and then tag the cheeze eaters.

Not yet, but they limit access to viable poisons that work so cities in Ontario are starting to have rat issues they didnt have before.
As for the coyote, you leave the carcass but have to take the hide under Ontario rules, which as has been said is subjective whether it is a viable fur.

As you said, liberal bunny huggers at work. If it is a "politically correct" push then the correctness of the charge(s) doesn't matter. They are using the "process" as the punishment. With the media release with potential release of the "offenders" names, plus the cost of defending themselves in court, the punishment has already been accomplished whether FW win or not. If you have to go through all of this are you going to head out coyote hunting again the next weekend?

A lot depends on what constitutes value. With good un-rubbed eastern coyote pelts going at auction at the fur houses for $25 to $30 they have value of sorts. The MNR takes $2.00 plus in royalties, the auction houses take 11% plus a $1.00 drumming fee to sell them. If a rubbed coyote pelt sells for $3.00 as has happened to me in the past I am already at least 33 cents in the hole not counting my time to skin, flesh, board and dry the pelt. Therefore that rubbed or mangy coyote has no value and can and should be left for the birds and other critters to eat. But not left out in the open for all the world to see as that causes bad public relations for trappers and hunters.
