coyote hunting

Short answer? Yes. Long answer whatever gun you like the feel of in the price range you want. Nowdays all modern rifles will be capable of coyote accuracy at standard distances. I vote for the tikka t3 but a ruger, savage, weatherby, howa, winchester, browning etc will all work just as well. As for caliber it has been argued up and down sideways and backwards and there still is no good winner. 223 has cheap ammo and more choice in rifles. 22-250 has better range and more knockdown power.

Define affordable?....it's different for everyone. .223 is cheaper to shoot from an ammo stand point. 22-250 same size bullet, bigger case, but better range and killing authority.

Go feel up some guns in the price range you can afford! Then read some reviews. You can post another querry here after you narrow it down to what you're considering. But be prepared for the good, the bad, and the Ugly about the rifle you may be considering.

I had a Savage Axis in ,22-250 as my coyote rifle. Changed the scope out for a better Bushnell I had laying around.

The rifle was extremely accurate and overall cost me less then $500. Shot incredibly well. I regret selling it still... The guy I sold it to has dropped a number of coyotes with it so far and loves it. Can't beat it for the price, at the time i think I paid $400 for it with taxes in and then had a $100 scope laying around, took the one it came with off because it's not the best of scopes.

Starting into reloading am using the Lyman 50th edition as reference. There are descriptions of jacketed hollow points, but no FMJHP.

I shot a 1.5 inch 4 shot group at 200 yards with my Weatherby Vanguard S2 the 5th shot made the group 2.25 inches. My choice would be the 223. Weatherby - Howa - Savage are all good

Get a 22-250 because of the laser beam trajectory, you will regret a 223

How so ??

To the OP,Remingtons can be had for $500.00ish dollars as can be the Weatherby Vangaurds, but the later will be a heavier gun.
Depends on your plan of attack ...stalking, setup and call or just hiking and stumbling across a target of opportunity.
You will be needing good rings and a good scope .
The scope will cost as much or more than the rifle.
Leupold VX-I is where I would start.
Best Regards,
Rob
