Coyote Hunting

At that distance, any consideration for the 17 HMR? I have nailed quite a few on my farm when in a hurry and a pack is in my field I grab the Tikka T1x 17 HMR. When doing all day hunting I use my 6.5CM but I am looking to build a 22-250 or 22CM for specific coyote hunting.

Surprised it took this long for .17 hmr to get the nod.

Savage a22 in .17 hmr and 25 round mag would be the hot ticket for an acreage pest rig that’s polite and accurate. I killed a pile without issues on parents acreage with a Cz varmint bolt gun. Cci 17 gr tnt ammo is best for them, still frangible to limit ricochets to nearly none but a little tougher than the v-max which is best for gophers and zero ricochet, the 20 gr xtp is too tough and just pokes holes in coyotes they go twice as far. Bolt actions work fine too. It’s a polite and very efficient way to handle acreage pesting. .204 Ruger also good no ricochet type option if going more hp, .223 be good too of course.

The .17 hmr 1” high at 100 zero will handle the most for the least though, about 135 yard Mpbr. Would be my first choice and bare minimum acreage pester for coyotes beavers porcupines and smaller etc. If it’s a much bigger acreage then you can get bigger and louder, ymmv.

You may wanna pick up some snares also, learn them, run them intermittently with twice a day checks, mix with some intermittent calling with a .17 hmr you’ll get the problem under control pretty quickly.

Good info and I agree with everything you posted. I really like the .204 ruger as well but it is getting harder and harder to find rifles in that calibre and ammo as well, at least in my area. Every shop I go into and ask about it they say they no longer bring them in as they do not sell, everyone just goes with 22-250. It is a shame.

.17 HMR or .22 WMR. Have both, but appreciate the slightly heavier pill in the WMR.

.12 or 10 ga., with 00 or 000 Buck.

Get a distress mouth call, bring them in. Road kill if you can get it.

And a buddy or your spouse, so you have 2 gunners with a rimfire and a shottie. They can come in real quick.

And don't talk to neigbours.

All the Best!
