Hi ,

I am eventually looking to get into hunting big game. But I would like to try hunting coyote first. Does anyone know where to hunt coyote's around Calgary area? Thanks.

Go to your local hunting store and buy a Randy Anderson coyote calling DVD he has 3 or 4 out and they are all good or you could get the one that comes with a howler & kiyi calls.

Once you've watched the DVD and practiced with the calls you will know what you are looking for.

Then head out to an area that looks good and you are surrounded by these areas in Alberta, get the land owners permission and start calling.

You will be surprised how easy it is to call in coyotes and fox.

Have you tried the howler and kiyi calls camp cook? I ask because I am wondering what some of the more effective and easier to work mouth calls are. To date most of my coyotes have just been shot from ranch fields during calving or haying.

I'll second Camp Cook's recommendation about the Randy Anderson DVDs, he puts a lot of good info on them. Depending on what your definition of close to Calgary is, there are quite a few coyotes in the Porcupine Hills south west of Calgary, west of Claresholm and Fort Macleod. Otherwise, most farmers and ranchers don't want coyotes around, so getting permission isn't always a big deal.

lots of coyotes round Calgary. Any ranch land or bush area has them. Check some of the river draws & colies. Permision is easy in most areas. If you find an area where the farmer said no just move over the next guy will prob OK

Thanks for the info I appreciate it.

Willing to travel a few hours outside Calgary so if anyones knows a place to go to hunt them?

Also is there a place to find out who owns a piece of land so I can ask them permission? Thanks.

You can buy maps at the county, MD or SA office where you chose to hunt. They are usually around $15. They have all the 1/4s with landowners names on them.

Check out the Eastern Irrigation District.......600,000 acres of prime coyote country and basically general acess with a few rules to follow.

a property map and a topo map together are one thing i am never without when hunting an area any more. 99% of hunting, i have found, is pre-season leg work. when i first moved here i spent the summer just driving around with a map, talking to farmers out in their feilds. finding out where is cool and where is not, also why i love gopher hunting; i found its about the best way to get out and meet the land owning contacts (cause it is very rare a farmer wont let you shoot gophers off his land) get your face out there and show that you are responsible enough. It also is a perfect way to recce out where the game is all summer, so when the season comes, you've got contacts, you've got a good lay of the land, and you know who is worth dealing with.

I've never hunted coyote before. Out of curiosity, what is typically done to the carcass? Do you keep the pelt? I've never heard of anyone eating coyote before, so what do you do with it?
