A friend wants me to work up some 22-250 loads for him. Since I've never loaded for 22-250 before any suggestions about bullets, powder and loads would be very helpful.

He mostly shoots coyote with it and sells the pelts so doesn't want a big exit wound. He does shoot the occasional deer as well and only wants to have to keep one load at hand.

Any advice about bullet choice, best powder and load?

Hornady SPSX 55grners on top of a little varget does the trick. They go in and explode. I have never had an exit on a yote yet with them. Just cant shoot them faster than 3600fps or the seem to dissapear, if you know what I mean.

oh ya and they are reasonably priced.

The best balance between killing coyotes and having something left to skin seems to the 50 and 52 grain Berger Varmint Match bullets. There is a loose group of us that collectively have shot 100s of coyotes with this bullet, and many others. We've quit looking for better. If your rifle won't shoot a flatbase Berger its time to rebarrel or sell it. My own load for my Kimber is 34 grains of IMR4895, but there are many ways to get to the same place.

I really like the Speer 52 gr. Hollow point behind Varget. Ive tried Bergers and never did get good groups but have heard if you can get them to shoot they are an excellent fur round. What ever you do stay away from the V-Max.

Cheers!!

Yeah, no kidding on the V-max! As much as I like them for gophers, they aren't a coyote bullet. Even dropped down to .223 speed they are NFG.
Like Scott R I've also had good luck with the Speers, both the big hollow point and the BTHP Match. They work better in front of the powder though.:p

I just got my 22-250 and been busy with hunging season.

But now thats over and its back to shooting yotes.

I have a batch of 50grn Nosler Balistic tips over H380, I shot one small yote early (pre-season) at very close range and it made a bit of a mess but the pelt was not worth taking that early in teh season so I did not skin it out to see the damage.

So I'll see what pans out this weekend.

Be careful with H380 for cold weather coyote loads. This powder is famous for dropping velocity and pressure when temperature drops. A great load in the summer can easily turn to #### in the winter. Its a trait of ball powders, and H380 is probably the worst of the bunch. Something to watch for.

ah thanks I didn't know, :( but it flows really nice out of the powder measure. :(

I guess some testing is in order.

hmmmm I have a few pounds of IMR4895

I used H380 for years in my 22-250. Both summer and winter. Any pressue drops were not noticable to me.

All those dead coyotes couldn't feel any pressure drop either. ;)

Thanks for the advice, guys. I don't know the twist yet, the owner didn't know and he hasn't brought his rifle over yet. He's been having good results with some old RCMP issue Imperial with a 55 gr HP so I'm thinking the Speer 52 HP should perform similar to what he has been using. At first glance at the books it looks like about 35 gr of Varget?

Varget is a great powder especially for us northern folks where winter and -30 degree days happen often. I have found it very consistant in the gopher patch and in those -30 degree days chasing yotes. 55 gr'ers seem to really shine with Varget.
Im going to give the H380 a try here as Ive got 2 lbs of the stuff and im tapped on Varget.

Cheers!!

I loaded up 100 rnds of 22-250 with Speer 52 gr HP over 36 grs of Varget, 2.340" oal. My friend tells me they are shooting well under 1" at 100 yards and he took 3 coyotes with them today and one last week. Only one had an exit hole and that was because he shot it too far back (running shot) and gut shot it.

Thanks for the advice, it was good!
