I am having a problem on my property, the coyote/wolf population is soaring and causing too much grief. I just lost a good dog and don't want to lose another, nor do I want to see my girls upset again.

Calling them in to shoot is not a good option, I think it is more likely to backfire then help solve the problem.

I am a complete rookie at snaring coyotes. I have borrowed a few snares and need to set them up.

The coyotes are using my frozen creek as a trail, lots of sign, so that is where I plan to set the snares.

What is the best type of set-up to use?? What should I do about scent??

Any advice or links would be great.

Find a section where they HAVE to travel, something like a path with some kind of obstacle to taper them into the snare.

Either that or just set up a barrel with the snare at the front and a chunk of meat in the back, they aren't as smart as many people think.

Why can't you just pop em? Crancky neighbors?

I used to call them and pop them. BUT, a couple of times my girl's cats went missing the same night I called them. Coincidence, probably not. Leaves a damn guilty feeling in the pit of your stomach when you're watching your little girls cry about their kitties.

My property is all bush, but they use the creek as a highway, 90% of sign is on it. It doesn't taper anywhere. I suppose I could try plastic garbage cans.

The creeek is called Steephill Creek, walking up and down is a tough go, not carrying barrels, heart can't do it.

Those 'yotes will follow the same trails throughout the bluffs and these paths will be obvious. Hang the snare in the most dense areas. Fence crossings are deadly to set. Remember to place a "jump stick" over the top of the snare to keep the deer out of the wire. You can construct a " squeeze" area using blow down willows etc. They may take a while to get used to it then set it up with some snares when they start travelling through it. Good luck. Snares rely on a 'yote travelling through it at speed. Do not use any lures around the snare as it will cause the dog to slow and he may detect the snare.
good luck from a fellow trapper,
Darryl
