Alright so a friend and I have permission to hunt a property on friday. Neither of us have hunted coyote before so we only have the knowledge we have gathered from the internet.

If you could give us any strategies that you have had success with (we will be hunting in SW Ontario) that would be great!

Things we need to know:
What to look for (we know they are in the area)?
What time is best to get to your stand?
How to best mask our scent other than making sure we are facing into the wind because they like to sneak around first?

Anything else you guys can think of to improve our chances of success would be fantastic!

Oh and for those of you that are interested we will be using a Savage Predator 10 in .204 and a Stevens 200 in .243 with a varminter stock from Boyds.

Thanks in advance!

What time is best to get to your stand? 1/2hr before sunrise or slightly earlier also in the evening just before the sun is going down

How to best mask our scent other than making sure we are facing into the wind because they like to sneak around first? Skunk sent works as well as showering and washing your clothes in sent killer try not to break a sweat on your walk to the stand take your time and be quite.

Set up cross wind from your caller and be motionless but ready around here fawn in distress is working well

Awesome thanks for the info.
I'm not sure if you are aware of varmint al's website but we made his "el cheapo" e-caller and downloaded some of his sound files he has for free. I will try and get some fawn in distress.

This is a good start.

Thanks again!

Show up early, lesson for them to howl. Sneak in to were you hear the most racket. Make your stand there.

Learn from your mistakes Friday and have fun. The Internet won't make you a pro.

Watch the wind. Coyotes will often circle and come in at a target from down wind.

Don't over do it on a rabbit call. To much will give you away. Just enough makes the coyote show it's self looking for were the sound came fro
.
Fawn distress calls don't work well this time of the year... Because there are none.

It's just about the "rut" for coyotes as well. If you can get a can of predator bomb use it to cover your sent.

If you use a decoy set it up at some distance from you. Like 100y

If nothing shows don't be to disapointed. This is probably the worst time of year to call coyotes. You have a slightly less chance of sitting on the edge off a field and hopeing one walks by within range. There are way to many food sources this time of year that they do not have to risk an unknown source of food. Coyotes are for the most part very smart with a full aray of sences it isn't untill winter when the stomach overrides the brain that they become easier to call in.

I beg to differ that there are no fawns.... I just about smoked one on my drive home last night it still even had faint spots.

It is definitely easier to call in the winter or early spring. Many hunters that I know have better success in April to early June with a fawn distress then they do in the winter using a rabbit distress. We have better success in the winter running hounds or hunting bait piles with a decoy and a simple coyote call.

I too would sayg that calling this time of year can be productive. However you will probably have more young of the year come to your call than seasoned old dogs.

Give it a whirl and try. You will make mistakes that will cost you when you are first learning. Take those lessons and store them up top for future stands. Don't be disappointed and keep trying. It took me a while before everything started happening right but now the success rate is high.

There are some good websites/forums out there dedicated to this topic.

thanks for all the help guys! We went out today to ask around for some more land to hunt on and were successful with one really nice farmer giving us access to another 300 acres! Hopefully we will be successful but we will go in hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Thanks again for the tips.

"...sound files..." If you're thinking recorded calls, check the hunting regs to be sure electronic calls are legal.
Patience is on some occasions a virtue. Hunting coyotes is one. Wiley can and will come from a long way.

Where would I find these regs on electronic calls? This is the first I have heard of this... We will be hunting just outside of St. Thomas.

Thanks for the clarification GJ, I was scared for a second hahah only a day away and it is too late to call the MNR office.

I guess I'll have to keep my eyes out for magpies ;)

you are good with the e-callers here. i actually live just outside of st.thomas if you want you can PM me where you are gonna be i can probably give you a good layout of the land depending where you are.
