After several years without battling the mighty groundhog I've been inspired by my new 17HMR to revisit a farm 30km east of Ottawa that used to have respectable groundhog numbers. Talking with the farmer I was surprised to learn that he hadn't seen a groundhog in ages. I spent a couple of hours walking around to confirm that there wasn't a trace of groundhogs - did see three wild turkeys though. What he has seen is coyotes (something that he'd never seen until a couple of years ago). Hell, I even had three adolescent coyotes yipping up a storm outside of my bedroom window one night last week at 4:00am.

Is there anyone east of Ottawa who knows where groundhogs can still be found? Or perhaps I should break out the .223 :sniper: and switch over to coyote hunting...

Tons of yotes, a friend near Richmond has bonfires every once and a while, the yotes are getting more and more bold coming quite close to us around the fire.
Let me know if you find a few places and want another gun, I have my 6.5x55mm up here and can get my .222 Rem sighted in before the snow flies.

Recently had a bonfire in the backyard (outside of Limoges) and you could hear the coyotes vocalizing in the corn field about 30-40m away from us, which really impressed our suburban guests. Hmmm, next time I take a rifle for a walk I think it'll be a .223 instead of a .17...

I have a friend on a farm who lives south of Ottawa, in Winchester, and I have tried calling coyotes a few times there, but haven't seen any yet. We saw some last year when we were four-wheeling.

Anyone know if the farmers east of Ottawa are having problems? Anyone mind sharing locations? I have all of my gear, and I am really searching for places to hunt geese/duck, deer, and small game..

I guess I might as well ask here too, seeing as the Ottawa people will be looking at this. Does anyone know if its possible to do squirrel hunting in larose forest?

There's about a half dozen fat ground hogs living in Arnrprior, about 20m south of the 417. :D

I get pi**ed off every time I drive by & see the little buggers running around.
