From Questar's website, these are "high strength polymer" couplers; from CanAm's website the other ones that sell for $40 are "aircraft aluminum".

I am debating whether to buy these or not; $6 makes them a good buy no matter what, but I wonder how strong they would be compared to the alluminum ones. I know they have not been around too long, but has anyone been able to break one of these yet - or an aluminum one for that matter? I suspect they would work just as well in summer, but I am not sure how they would hold up to -45 C

Damn... if you're out playing with your AR in -45C weather then I'll be happy to replace your coupler for free if it breaks... however... I suspect you'll be having a lot of other weather related issues besides the coupler.

The above was written before I had ever even seen one. But now that I have some I can say they work at -35C (without windchill). I wasn't dropping them onto concrete, stress testing them, or anything - but I know they work with normal use. Also, now that I own both I can say that if I buy more couplers I will choose the $5.99 high strength polymer ones because:
-the aluminum ones are a solid block and very heavy, while the polymer ones are basically weightless
-$5.99 vs. $39.99 needs no explanation.
-if I want to take the coupler off to clean the mag I don't need to find an allen key as you do for the aluminum ones. It is also worth mentioning that even though the polymer ones don't have a screw to secure they mags in place, they fit plenty snug enough that they won't be coming apart accidentally
-and now I have a -45 replacement guarantee in case they break in the cold ;) ...which they likely won't
