CQ 311 Norinco owners (M311)

Hello and I am wondering wich type of ammo this firearm likes the best to worst? I just purchased one and am awaiting delivery. Will it accept Wolf steel case? Or is it a brass only gun? Any info would be very helpfull, and thanks!

American Eagle, Winchester White Box and Remington are all good to go.

that thing is built loose like a chinese SKS. it only has a 1/12 twist barrel so don't waste your money on anything over 55g.

feed it whatever you find. they all work fine in it.

55g is the way to go. I tried 62 gr when i had mine and all i got was keyholes in my targets. you can et good accuracy with 55 grain ammo with a CQ-311. Surprisingly good.

Winchester White Box

Careful with Winchester USA2232 white box stuff. Almost non-existant bullet crimp. Winchester will tell ya over the phone not to use it in semi-auto's, but won't put that in an e-mail or writing. I had a lot that would jam, and when ejected they had the bullet pushed back into the case. Dangerous.

Thats the stuff there that was ####in up really good in the FS200 right?

I'll be sure to avoid those specific rounds.

FS2000, old school AR15 with no M4 feed ramps, Ar180B. All three I had out that day were having problems.

Originally thought it was a bad batch. Went back to the gun store and bought a fresh box (lot code was different), was able to turn the cartridge upside down and press the bullet into the case pretty easily.

Immediatly phoned Winchester "Oh, that ammo isn't for use in semi auto's..." WTF!? Why doesn't it say that on the box??? "Well, it works OK in some semi auto's.", but the bullet pushes back into the case on the ones it doesn't work on, is that safe??? "I'm not sure. You'd have to ask our legal department.".

Sheesh. I've heard of some people having really good luck with the stuff in their semi's, but I guess all it takes is once to ruin your day (kaboom I mean, not jam ).

The 45gr seems to be the worst (USA 2232). Not sure if that's what Marstar is sellin or not.

Have you ever owned one? Loose isn't a word I would use to describe it.

Also, mine fed those 45grn hollowpoints fine - but my new AR will not at ALL. Best bet is to steer clear of those suckers either way just to be safe.

Hrmm, I have 1200 rounds of the marstar 55 gr 223 with no visible crimp that I bought for my soon to arrive AR180B2. Please tell me I don't have to run these through my lee factory crimp die... Well at least my range has some presses set up there if it turns out to be necessary.

Where do you get this kit from and how much , sounds fun and cheap.

ianwd: I bought it at Milarm in Edmonton, I can't remember the price but as far as I know Colt has stopped making them a while ago. You can buy other aftermarket conversion kits and they are supposed to work just fine. With the colt one you open up the top and remove the bolt. Put in the conversion bolt and close the upper and that is it. It comes with a 10 round clip and I have fed every type of 22 ammo that I could find to see what was the best and what would jam. I haven't found a bad brand yet of ammo that will not feed. The nice thing about the conversion kit is it laterally take 1 minute to convert and the aim to 50 yards is dead on with either the .223 or .22lr ammo.

agent_mango: I wonder if the ammo is lacquered some how. I know alot of the eastern block stuff the bullet is almost glued in with the lacquer to prevent the bullet from displacing. At any event I would be very surprised to see a bullet move inside the case for two reasons, 1: In my reloads I have to add enough powder to the case that it is a compressed load anyways. Every powder that I have tried is almost up inside the neck of the brass, mind you they are loaded with military powder so it might have a bit more internal area. 2. You have 5 shots to work with and semi-auto at that. If you had 30 rounds at full auto that might be a different story.

Yeah it's probably not going to be a problem, although I doubt it's lacquered since it's Western stuff.

Just to clarify by what I mean by a visible crimp, here is a picture. On the left is marstar WWBox 223, on the right is WWBox 223 I purchased a few years ago. Both are 55 gr loads. You can see that both have bullets with crimp grooves, but only the right has visible crimp marks.
