CQB alternative

I want a Variable power scope for my AR. The Eotech / aimpoint thing is nice, but I'd like something with some magnification and I can't drop a $1000 for an Elcan or a magnifier / eotech combo, or a CQB.

Anyone have any recommendations in the $500 range that will hold up that has a 1-4ish magnification range?

with an illuminated reticle or not ? If not, lots of great choices (I would start with Leupold - the Ultralight scopes are priced well under $500 depending on model). If you need the IR, you could even go a used Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x20 (new about $750, I have seen used ones around $500).

For around $650, check out the Burris XTR 1-4 x 24mm. It has an illuminated reticle. Wolverine Supplies can get them.

If money is a big issue but you still want quality, go with the Falcon CyberK mentioned.
I have one, great scope. Terrific optics and has the magnification range well suited to cqb distance range playing.

You won't be disappointed with the Falcon, and you'll have lots of money for ammo to practice with.
