Having competed with an M14/ M1A for many years (decades ago), I did my reloads (5 and 5) with stripper clips back in the day. With the SKS, I feel like shouting, “Marty, we are going BACK to the future!!”

I need to train once again... this dormant skill set needs to be refreshed...

So back in the day, I was able to make up some dummy rounds in .308 and from there, practiced my clip loading/feeding. I am uncertain I will / might/can/may reload for this round when factory ammo is inexpensive (well, that’s debatable).

Anybody here reloading the 7.62 x 39 cartridge able to crank out and glue some dummy rounds in brass cases?

Thoughts from the reloaders of Russian booolits?

Cheers, Barney

I just bought some commercial dummy round.

I’m currently trying to find something to use as mag pouch for a belt. What I have in mind is a pouch/insert that will allow 2 clips per pouch to be loaded bullet facing front with the empty part of the clip easy to grab.

I use a Ammo belt for a Garand , left the clips a little longer than 5 rounds so it has a handle to grab. I can fit 2 clips per pouch and it works well.

My five cents.
SKS stripper clips are steel. It was design to accept steel casings. I found that commercially available dummy rounds, made from aluminum or brass, are binding inside of the clip and making reloading process not as smooth.
I just collected some range 7.62x39 steel cases, cleaned it, lube a #### out of it (to make it easy on the die), crimped it with pulled out booolits, filled a primer pocket with thermal glue and polished whole round to make it shiny - to make it look different from live round.
Works like a charm. But sizing and crimping steel is not fun, so use plenty of lube.

Or, this is also the way:
