I recently picked up an old 22 single action for next to nothing from a guy I know. Its marked HY HUNTER INC. FIREARMS MTG. CO BURBANK CALIFORNIA. The frame has a crack just below the rear sight and just above the cylinder, If that makes sense. Is it safe to shoot? Would jb weld fix it? Previous owner tried to tack weld it back together but its made from pot metal and that didn't work at all. What can I do to fix it up? Just to have a beater, no matter how junky they are I hate to throw a gun away!

If the cylinder is solid and is secure in the frame I'd give it the flex test and if it passed I'd shoot a short in it and make sure it doesn't bulge the case and make sure the crack doesn't get worse ... If it doesn't do either of those it could be a short gun

what you're describing is a crack /break from the topstrap to the rest of the frame- even on Quality revolvers like smith and Wesson , ruger or colt, it's a DEATH sentance

All the pictures I can find look like it's die cast pot metal with a pressed in steel liner for the barrel.

Cracked? It's a goner. Part it out or forward it to a trainer that needs a donor for a course set.

While it's sorta possible to weld a pot metal part, it is essentially a matter of trying to keep it all in place as you melt it and cast it back into one piece. Not a real option here, I think. If it were a steel frame, then I would say a competent TIG or Gas welder should be able to put it back together, but it'll never be as good as new, so it's not really a good option anyway.

At one time, it would be a prime candidate to be the coolest Cowboys and Indians toy six shooter around, other than one I know of that actually WAS a Colt six shooter that did yeoman service for it's bearer as a kids toy.
My, how things have changed!

JB Weld is epoxy glue with metal powder in it. For these purposes, it's junk.

Listen to these folks, just cut the receiver in half after stripping it of saleable parts, like the cylinder/pin and barrel and deregister it.

If it's the pistol I think it is, it also came with a 22mag cylinder. It didn't stand up to the extra pressures very well and many of them actually lost the top straps. I remember something about them actually stretching on the top strap and the cylinder pin being next to impossible to remove because the frame was warped.
