crappy day shooting barrel m14 critrion exploded

good lesson learned the hard way brother... im sorry about your rifle, glad you aren't hurt and also glad you have the balls to post this to help remind people.

thank you all for compassion
normally do not say
fountain I will not drink your water
but this time, I think I can say that it will not happen again

glad your alright.

depending on the damage, and hoping that it is limited to the last inch of it. what would the possibility of cutting it down and recrowning it to 16"? sell it as a restricted socom barrel to help fund a new one. just thinking out loud ;)

If the barrel is not bulged would it be possible to back bore the barrel an inch or so and recrown?

EDIT
Eww just went back to look at your pic and realized the crack in the barrel.

That's not an explosion. Isn't the barrel either. Even though the barrel is toast for an M305(cut to 18.5 and re-crowned it'll do on a bolt action). That's most likely the result of an obstruction. Still an all round crappy day though.

An obstruction like a bore sighter perhaps?

:p

ummm... yea, that's quite likely what caused it, given the fact that it was exactly what caused it....

wow... spelling and grammar count, but reading the OP don't :p

happened to me and I posted it in a thread too a while back! Mine just bulged though and was not a criterion. Damn...I feel your pain. I wil NEVER by another (in the barrel) bore slighter, and I recommend anyone who have them to throw them away, or never bring them to the range. There are other types of bore sighters that are safer.

I don't understand though, why are bore sighters so damn popular? I don't get it.... There are so many instances of people doing this, and while everyone says "never me" clearly there are some who it ends up being "#### that was me".

I've never seen the need for one.... get within maybe 3 inches and a couple inches high at 25 yards (you can generally do this without a bore sighter at all) then move out and fine tune like you would normally. Costs you one, maybe two shots extra. I personally don't see the risk of forgetting worth those two rounds.... I also don't see the point in spending money on something like a bore sighter though.....

/activate sarcastic RCMP mode
We keep sine this happen, we must ban bore sighter altogether to prevent people from getting hurt. Think of the children! We must protect people from themselves! Elephants are blue and tigers are green. Nine hundred and eleventy three! Bill ate an Apple and now purple monkeys!.....

I think I've exposed enough of the RCMP brass and left wing politicians (and maybe even conservative politicians) train of thought for one day.....
