Crimp die pulling boolit back out?

Decided to switch over from .45 to load some .40sw.Seems like problems like to follow me. Have almost the same issue with not being able to get enough flare on the case mouth again same as the issue with my 45acp. I think maybe the powder coat is adding too much thickness perhaps. When I use the FCD it seems to pull the boolit from the case and I barely have it adjusted for very little crimp. What would cause this? Cast boolits are starting to cause me grief. Maybe time to go back to copper plated!!

My pc coated bullets can be hammered flat and the pc sticks to them. Your 45 were pealing from the case mouth. It is either too thick or it is not reaching the temp to stick properly. PC only needs a light coat to do its job. Less is better sort of thing. How do you apply it?

I use the shake and bake method. I'm trying a little more crimp and so far it doesn't seem to be pulling the boolit back out as often when I lower the ram on the Lee turret press. I don't try to put a heavy coat when powder coating however some powders seem to coat thicker than others.

These problems are common with powder coating; I'm back to factory lubed DRG bullets for everything.

I use nothig but Lee, but they are the cheapest for a reason.

Never had an issue with the FCD and powder coating

Sometimes they are not finished off as much as they should be.

I suggest taking your FCD apart and see if there are any burs still left.

If so gently and carefully remove them. Dont go nuts. Just a little touch and try, repeat

Remember advise is worth what you pay for it ;)

I don't use FCD but have had this issue with regular seating/crimping dies trying to seat larger diameter bullets.
A bad one was 38-55 i wanted to used .380" but the dies were made for .375"-.377" so they would be caught up on the crimp ring in the die. Picked up some RCBS Cowboy dies and had no more trouble.

Between having trouble belling enough and this issue it really sounds like your bullets are too big for your setup. Clear powder coat has been the thinnest in my experience too so might help. What diameter are you sizing to? Pass through sizer not the advertised size or maybe not getting them deep enough in a Lyman style sizer?

Definitely a learning curve using cast and every gun and mold has it's own needs. Very satisfying when it comes together though.

I'm sizing to .401 with the Lee sizer. May may have to try a different Crimp die perhaps. May also have to try a thinner Powder coat as well. Aside from the fun of making my own boolits and powder coating it sure is easier with factory rounds ... Minus the price of course.
