Esteemed Gun Nuts and M14 Experts, I have a question for you.

I succumbed to the pressure, and bought a Norinco M-14s. Yes, they are awesome. My example seems to be quite noce except the front sight is canted to the right.

I've read many of the discussions and posts about the rifles. I understand that a canted front sight is often related to barrel indexing. I've examined my flash hider assembly and I don't think barrel indexing is the problem.

The front sight dovetail on my flash hider seems to be cut at an angle, downward from left to right. Has anyone ever seen this?

Should the edges of the front sight dovetail be parallel (from left to right) to the edges of the flat side underneath the flash hider (where the bayonet lug isn't)?

I've tried to get pictures of my flash hider, but I really suck at taking closeups with my camera. (It's got way more controls than any of my guns...) I may have to fire up MS paint to make a diagram...

Thanks for any insights. I may be posting a WTB M-14 compensator on the EE shortly. The smith coastguard brakes sure look cool...

The flash hider and front sight mount often a weak spot on Norcs. Email Marstar about it and they will take care of you. What I wound up doing was taking mine up to Jason at Gunco in Ottawa and have him remove the flash hiders, which had off-center slots and bad front sight posts. The front sights were also machiend a little crooked, one badly so. I mailed them back to Marstar and they replaced them with new ones. Tested one at VKHPC Wednesday night and it works fine now; I no longer have to drift the front sight hard over to the left and crank the rear sight all the way over to the right to get zeroed.

The more I shoot these guns, the more I like them.

One of mine had the very same problem. You'll have to send it back to Marstar for replacement, find a gunsmith who can fix it, or buy a flash hider/front sight that's in good shape from the EE.
Good luck!

I didn't buy mine from Marstar. (Missed the boat.)

I was trying to find out if they carried spare flash hider assemblies, but their website is down.

Thanks for the info guys.

Crooked sight... again

I decided to re-incarnate this thread since the topic is the same - crooked front sight on a brand new M14.

Here is mine:

Since I didn't buy it from Marstar (Canadian Tire actually ), the warranty might not be that simple...

Did anybody machine the dovetail to make it parallel to the bottom?
Have you had any problems with elevation adjustment after?

Anybody sells the STRAIGHT Norinco flash hiders?

You sure it's not an indexing issue? It's hard to tell from the pic.

If it's really not an indexing issue, I'll trade you my norc flash hider for the cost of postage. Be advised, my norc hider has two holes where I drilled out the welds.

Nope... it's ON TOP OF indexing issue (which is really small). ;) The camera and rifle/bottom of the hider were positioned level... so what you see is an actual angle.

i have actually experienced this phenomena thi past weekend. i could have sworn that my rifle needed indexing........but lo and behold......barrel is indexed perfectly.
PROBLEM: front sight was leaning to the right......i was told that quite possibly my barrel was UNDER tightened. was told to get barrel re-indexed.
SOLUTION: took the barrel and reciever to a teacher who tested the theory of improper indexing, but found the problem to be a poorly manufactured front sight and mount. THE FIX: just look for a new sight........cause my #### WILL fall off!!!!!....LMAO

hope this helped

FWIW,

I ended up buying a Springfield Armoury muzzle brake from Brownell's to replace mine. (Even though I've put an optic on my rifle I just couldn't stand the shamefully crooked front sight.)

The SA brake looks cool, and helps make the rifle nice to shoot as well.

Wow, by that picture it looks like someone at the factory was asleep at the shop bench/mill or whatever they use to make these flash hiders.

Glad that Brownells can help you out. Thanks for sharing and enlightening us!

One more thing - Marstar said they had replacements when I called them (several months ago) for only $20 each.

The catch is they had VERY FEW LEFT. For all I know they may not have any left now...

I seem to have the same problem has you have KFB.

My, as of yet unfired, receiver assembly is at Marstar's waiting for my decision regarding keeping the gun as is and ''inverting'' the front sight (they say it straightens it) or waiting for their next shipment for a new gun.

The people at marstar say it's the indexing but It had a seriously canted dovetail on the FH.

Did you have any fitting issues with the SA FH?

Was the front sight included with the FH?

Regards,

Chris

I have one with a similar issue, it is the front sight but its angled opposite to what yours was. I'll be buying a new flash hider/muzzle brake from Alberta Tactical in the next month or so. A rail system works good as a replacement too. Being an older M305 I had mine modified: new bolt, barrel, not sure what tac stock yet but aiming for a JAE or similar.
Thanks for the info guys.

Yep,

I had my barrel indexed at the clinic by M14Doc and now my Flash Suppressor is leaning to the left. Either send your rifle back to Marstar and chance getting another rifle with the same prob. or get a nice USGI off EE and be over and done with that. (Contact M14Doc as he has one left I believe) oh and post some pics.

Cheers and good luck!
