cross border shopping for bullets, brass etc

Just as Quigley says, the issue is EXPORTING, and not importing. Gets confused all the time because Canadian border services will tell you what you can import back to Canada and people get that confused with what the US government will allow you to EXPORT.

A licenced US exporter can get an export permit.
If you really want to do your own importation, go to DFAIT, and get a Canadian International Import Certificate (IIC). Send this to the licenced US exporter who will apply for the export permit. Once it has been issued, your order can be shipped.
YOU cannot get a US export permit.

A few friends of mine bring back ammo and powder all the time. I tell them that its not the canadian laws but the american laws and that they better brush up on there info....or they could be in big trouble.

The Canadian border people will let you bring it back but should the zealots from Homeland Security decide to check out cars before you make the line you're going to lose everything and likely not be permitted back in the States if not jailed on the spot. The BATF said it was fine but none of the US federal agencies are on the same page they just make it up as they go along.Reloading equipment ,presses, dies etc are fine....not ammo, bullets, primers or brass..............I hope they enjoy their recession.......Harold

You can purchase components with your BATF form 6 but you cannot take them out of the US without an Export permit.

Odd laws indeed.

I may just buy some stuff up here for this year but will probably make about a 3-4 grand order next year to make the permit worth while( I will obviously have to pay a U.S business for the expense of the permit). I am just tired of next to nothing being available here.
Thanks for all the info guys...

You will find that depending on what you are purchasing, some Canadian prices are pretty good, especially on things like plated bullets that are manufactured here, and also if you are able to pick up the stuff yourself. Make a deal with a dealer (site sponsor) for a quantity order and you will find the TOTAL LANDED COSTS not much different than what you can do it for yourself.

Also, for export from the US, not only does the exporter have to be licensed, but the MANUFACTURER also has to be a licenced exporter.

Items such as powder and primers are very expensive to ship across the border because of shipping regulations, in addition to the export regulations.

I am just really looking at bullets and brass. I really don't expect much difference in price.I just can't get the stuff here half( actually MOST) of the time.I am not knocking the Canadian dealers as they are at the mercy of the distributors and the distributors are at the mercy of the american suppliers.
I suspect MIDWAY or one of those would happy to take an order if it is big enough.Obviously I would have to make a very large order to justify the cost of the export permit( I think it is about $300 USD).

Midway and most US sellers (that have the best prices) will NOT export. Many won't even take your order unless your credit card is from a US bank. A few years ago Midway got dinged for exporting about 200 scopes without export permits, It cost them $330k in fines PLUS their legal fees.

The exporter permits are about $3000 annual cost PLUS a cost for every shipment. It costs the same amount to export a gun as it does components, so let that be a guide.

Many Canadian dealers here import directly and don't go through Canadian distributors.

It is not $3000 for a ONE TIME permit. It may be $3000 for an yearly permit. I was going to buy a gun about 4 months ago from MT guns in the states. They told me I would have to pay for the export permit but I could buy as may extra barrels, etc for it. They told me the cost of the permit was $250 and that they have sold a number of guns to canadians over the last year so the info is current and correct.

Yes, my wording wasn't very clear, that is why I included "plus a cost per shipment". Their annual permit is about $2800 plus a cost per shipment.

Wording changed for clarity.

I was hoping there was another way around it but I guess I will just have to buy a permit. I will wait till I can make a very large order to make the extra expense worthwhile.
I would gladly buy it here but as I said previously it simply isn't available most of the time.Maybe our market is just too small for distributors to stock up or more likely they are at the mercy of the U.S suppliers themselves.
thanks for all the help and tips guys....

Strange experiences here. I bring ammo across every few months, never a problem. Pay my taxes and I'm on my way. I've never failed to declare it. Is it really different if one is bringing back bullets and cases?

FWIW, Buffalo Gun Center and Gander is where I pick up my ammo.

The problem is with U.S customs, not Canadian customs. If I understand correctly gun parts.bullets, brass etc need to be accompanied by the proper export permit.otherwise they could confiscate it( atleast that isa how I understand it). I was hoping it was not the case but apparently it is.

You can't legally bring back ammo without a US export permit. If you ever get caught on the US side...you are f**ked
