Hey there, I am right handed left eye dominate. I know for iron sights I should use my left eye. How important is this with telescopic sights?
Thanks in advance!

Close your left eye while sighting and shooting right handed... with iron sights or a scope... it isn't that hard to do...

If your like me i cant just close my left eye only. I just learned to shoot left handed. After a few times shooting it feels natural.

You can change your eye dominant by wearing glasses with clear tap over the dominant eye. It will blur the vision on that eye and your body will begin to shift to relying on the other eye for dominance. Lutien, an eye vitamin, will help speed ed up the process.

I’m similarly afflicted. I’d recommend using your dominate eye to aim, and shooting with both eyes open. That’s my preference anyways. :)

I am cross dominant as well, but cope with it in a variety of ways. For shooting iron sights I do as mentioned above and place a small piece of translucent tape in the upper corner of my shooting glasses which blocks my left eye from seeing the sights. The translucent tape also ensures the same amount of light reaches both eyes, avoiding the sympathetic enlargement of the pupils that a complete eye patch would cause.

For scope shooting I don’t find it to be an issue and the view provided by the scope to my right eye is the dominant image to me. For pistol I use a combination of turning my head and shifting my hold to the left.

The tape method will work for scope shooting as well if you find you need it to ensure the view of your right eye takes over. It will probably be awkward depending on your rifle to shoot right handed scoped rifle shifting your head position to aim using your left eye.

I am right eye dominate and shoot right handed, I shoot with both eyes open with iron sights with flip up blinder over my left eye. When I shoot skeet I shoot right handed with both eyes open.
I know a few very good shooters that shoot the opposite hand because of cross dominance. First shooter, left handed in everything, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, writing, right eye dominate, shot right handed. Made several Bisley teams, Canadian Olympic Smallbore, several Palma teams shooting right handed.
Second shooter, right handed, left eye dominate, shoots left handed. Made about 30 consecutive Canadian Bisley teams, Palma teams etc.
Shooter number 3, right handed all the way. After many years shooting right handed now has vision problems with his right eye. Still shoots right handed with offset iron sights. Made more Bisley teams and Palma teams than I care to count.
Bottom line is, shoot with your dominate eye.

Right handed, left eye dominant. I shoot everything but pistols left handed. I feel that it keeps good muscle memory and "normalizes" everything for the faster shooting disciplines when both eyes are open. It cuts out most of the market for guns, but you end up with fewer yet nicer, more custom ones. You can only shoot one gun at a time, anyway.

Here's a real good video on eye dominance.

Interesting how good this kid is for his age... no dunce with a rifle that's for sure.

I suspect that he uses his dominant eye to acquire the next target to make cleaner transitions. Might actually be an advantage it certain situations.

Not for precision shooting but... You might also consider a red dot like the Armson OEG where you must shoot with both eyes open. I like using it on a tactical shotgun for skeet with big leads since there is no predetermined field of view. Again, I suspect there might be an advantage to using your dominate eye for the target and non dominant eye for the red dot.

I'm in the same boat.

Scopes I can get away with closing my eye or just focusing through the scope. Iron sights are much harder to use for me though. Shotgun I switched to left handed. Been thinking about doing that with a rifle too, but haven't given it a try yet.

Not gonna want to use that method with a rifle that actually recoils! lol

I see lots of guys shooting wrong handed because of eyes. Shooting any sort of tr use a blinder of some sort. For shotgun sort of shooting a blinder on the end of the barrel works well. This is attached along the rib and most would not even see it.

My daughter puts masking tape on the lens of her safety glasses on the left side... She has trouble simply closing it to take it out of play.

Its an exceptionally stable way of shooting once you get the hang of it. This guy at the time of the article was shooting 6mmBr @600m with exceptional results.

Nice to see I am not the only one having to do this! as I spent the first 30 years of my life before getting into shooting right handed and right eye dominant, until that was changed in an accident and I am now forced to be left eye dominant. I personally don't have the ability to just change eye dominance, as my right eye was damaged in an accident. I still shoot both eyes open but Id say 90% of my clear vision comes from my left eye now.

For most rifles with red dot sights I have been able to get away with higher lower 1/3 co witness mounts, and for scopes I have used rail risers under my scope mounts to raise them, and now its a little easier because they are now making higher mounts for people that use night vision googles and such. I just got a Geissele mount in for my newest scope and I was able to get it in a 1.93" mounting height, which is almost .5" higher then their standard mount. That allowed me to set up my scope and shoot like the guy in this picture comfortably with no added cost on the mount itself over their standard height, and no need for an extra rail riser.

Whenever this is not possible I try shooting left handed, but its still very awkward for me, so I still tend to prefer to be able to shoot right hand left eye
