they are'nt legal everywhere (n.b.) for sure. i beleive we even need an rpal to buy 1. not certain tho!

They are considered a regular bow in ontario. I think the same for quebec, but double check. I own one. As a college student away from home, I wouldn't have time to practice enough every season to ethically hunt, but a crossbow semi solves that ( still gotta practice, but more like a rifle.)

* Just looked on Canada Ammo, It looks pretty cheap to me, Its a 90lb draw weight, which is pretty light for an xbow.

You could use it for target practice, but wouldn't be able to hunt with it.

As far as I know, the crossbow is not part of the Federal Firearms Act and is legal to own anywhere in Canada. On the other hand, at the provincial level where the laws associated with hunting are a provincial power, some provinces have made it illegal for hunting purposes.

PS. The crossbow was originally part of C-68 but has been removed for some time.

Normal shoulder mounted crossbows are legal in Canada, no form of PAL is required to buy one. They are not controlled at this time as are firearms. The one form of crossbow that is prohibited / restricted is the small, one hand version, normally about the size of a Handgun. Each Province has their own restrictions in regards to hunting. As an example, in Alberta you may use one during the normal firearms seasons and during primitive weapon seasons. They may be used during the archery seasons, but only if you have a medical certificate from a physician stating that you are not capable of using normal archery equipment, and only then if you obtain a permit from Fish and Wildlife allowing you to use it during the archery season. There are some very good ones on the market, Bowtech, an archery company produces one that exceeds 400 FPS.
PSE, another archery company produces one that actually mounts on an AR15 stock which is utilized by the U.S. military, and they are achieving 4 inch groups at 100 yards.
Most credible archery stores can give you an abundance of information.

I dunno, I remember being told at SIR/Cabella's that you need just a PAL for a crossbow, because it functions like a firearm. I'm not usually one to jump to believe whatever bullsh!t the clowns at SIR/Cabella's say but that did make sense.

Plus I live in Manitoba.

I would have gave him the firearms number and told him to call and make the transfer and make him wait on hold and then look stupid on the phone when he finds out he is wrong Bahahahahaha
