So my oldest son and I went camping last week. We were sighting in the airgun again and it would appear that the piston/spring latch released. 
That is with the safety on, gun was cocked (break barrel) with a pellet loaded. Had not finished closing the breach when it released.
Now the whole works is jammed. Cannot move the cocking mechanism at all. I have yet to tear it down and see just what happened. I'll take some pics while I do so. I wonder what I am going to find?
