I own a Crossman Phantom that fires .22cal pellets at 495fps. I have my PAL, and own several rifles and shotguns. I would like to upgrade my Phantom to to fire the pellets 1000fps. Does anyone know were and how much to get the upgraded Piston or whatever I need to do the swap, and how much it would cost?

If it costs around $100 or something like that then I will just buy the Model that already fire the pellets that fast.

Go have a look on http://www.airgunforum.ca/forums/ in the "mods and repair" section, and you will have all the information required. Changing a spring often requires a spring compressor so parts don't go flying all over the place when you dismantle the gun. A new spring costs a lot less than $100.00 and you will have the chance to properly lube the inside of the gun.

You'll never make a Phantom in.22 crack 1000fps...............Phantoms are known for poor factory seals, varying sized pistons and being pretty much inaccurate when trying to scope them. With a stronger spring 750fps perhaps but it's still a Phantom. When it's affordable or you wish to upgrade get a Weihrauch and hand it down in the family. You won't wear it out in one lifetime..........JMO..........Harold ****you get what you pay for

I have a Phantom 1000 piston on order now and getting shipped to me probably Monday. I was told that the Spring in the 500 and the 1000 are the same, its just the piston thats different. The guy in this link, was hitting around 700fps with his modified the same way. I will be happy with that. It will be powerful enough to take small game then, and be fairly quiet compared to my .410 shotgun that I use now.

You will need to cut out the channel in the stock underneath for the extra travel the cocking lever will move.

You're right, it's not the spring you upgrade on a Phantom, it's the piston. If you tune the gun and change the piston your should be getting at least 680 but I haven't heard of over 750fps.

I suggest you browse the Canadian Airgun Forum for Phantom mod posts. There is another mod where they change some washers to tighten the lockup and then there are guys who report 3/8" groups at 40 yards with a scope on a tuned and tightened Phantom.

For the piston I recommend Eric at Scopes and Ammo, unless you are already friends with a Crosman dealer.

Good luck.

As far as i know, the only difference between a full power phantom piston and a canadian detuned one is that there is a bleed hole drilled through the piston face of the 500fps one. I've heard a couple guys mention using jbweld, tapping for a flush mounted screw, or spot welding the hold shut, and gettign results in the high 600s. After that, you're shimming the spring close to coil bind for more speed, and will blow the spring pretty quick.

I've also heard some similar stories regarding shortening the piston and relocating the catch/hole where the trigger sear engages so as to allow for higher volume of air with similar results. I'm on the fence. I've been shooting dimes at 30 yards with my phantom 500 stock, and not sure whether i want to "upgrade" it. By all accounts it turns them pretty ugly and they're loud, recoil heavily, and aren't as accurate as the detuned versions.

Phantom

I've disassembled three Phantoms and have never seen one with a bleed hole. The stock 500 22 cal has the longer piston and shares the same spring as the Quest 800 22 cal. By using a 1000 piston and the original spring, you will get the same specs as the Quest 800 22 cal, which actually gives you 700fps more or less. They shoot harder, are a little louder and recoil is obviously more, but not harsh at all. I found no decrease in accuracy. For the price, I think it's a good air rifle with great parts availability and lots of fun to tinker with.

Phantom Mod

It depends on how old the gun is, I purchased one a month ago and took it apart and it had the shorter piston from the 1000 already in it. I braised the hole in the piston, and polished the hell out of all the moving parts to remove all the rough edges from the stamping in production. I had a new solid brass tophat machined that was 50 thou over in the size of the collar and overal length so it compressed the spring another 1/2 inch while adding extra weight which is transformed into inertia which in turn creates more compression. I am putting pellets consitantly into the bullseye at 40-50 yards and 1/2" deep into 1" cabinet grade plywood. No idea what FPS it is but the same crossman destroyer pellets were bouncing off the plywood before the mod.

Where did you hear that from? The stocks are not de-tuned, they are the same on both guns. I have never seen any stocks on the Phantom/Quest line that have had to be altered.

Sounds like you are confusing the Crosman pump gun valves. Some of them have bleed holes in the rear of the valve to keep the gun under 500fps.

EDIT - Just read the post above mine again, perhaps the newer models do in fact have a hole in the piston, I have never seen or heard of this. I have had 4 Quest/Phantom, none had holes.

Walmart in Whiterock (Vancouver region) had the Crossman Phantom .22 at 495fps, for just $99...so I bought it and a can of pellets, and we tried it out. Yep, it hits quite a bit harder than my .177!!!

Accuracy I achieved was a bit inconsistent: one group would be 1/2", the next be an inch off, then the next would be close, then the next would be "on", then a flyer an in and a half off...I blame the factory "iron sights", they seemed to have some movement. I strongly suspect the rifle itself is more than capable of being a true tackdriver...maybe not Olympic level, but tight groups just the same.

Walmart sells the Beeman 4x32 scope for about $39...are these a good match for this Phantom, or are they crap?

Phantom upgrade

Scopesandammo.com

Order the following:

GTX trigger upgrade. This is easy to do
Get 1000 piston and spring

When you disassble use moly lube an if you can get marcarri tar coat the spring.

Scope - buy an air gun rated scope 4x32 is fine.

In the end you will have a solid 680fps air rifle. You won't ever get 720 or greater with the phantom. It's nice and light and quick to point and with the upgrade it's cheap and will pack a nice thump.

If you have your pal look around for the following and if you spend around 300-400:

HW80
Diana 350 Magnum
Diana 48

My $0.02

Yes the detuned versions have a hole in the piston. I have one and have taken it apart and seen it. Plugged the hole and the speed and penetration of the pellet increased 2x by my seat of pants. The 1000FPS is for the .177 version not the .22. The .22 it's a heavier pellet and will only achieve ~700fps but will pack a punch. The spring and piston set for the 1000FPS version was exactly the same as the one that came with the rifle, except for the hole in top of the piston that allows air to bleed through and lower the FPS on the gun.

Another option would have been to buy a new RWS34 from Specialty Shooting Sports in BC for a little over $200 and shoot it.But seeing you already have the Phantom you're in for penny as is.................Harold

go with the phantom from wallmart for 99$. 30 minutes of your time for a tune up and your phantom will be able to shoot through about 1 and a quarter inches of your telephone book or nearly through a 2x4. can't go wrong!:D

I bought the phantom 500 last year and was not happy at all with it! every time I picked it up it was shooting somewhere else! the rear sight was garbage and always loose. I upgraded to the 1000 piston (.177 cal) and put on a RWS scope. Much better now but it still seems to shoot a little random at times (not locking up properly) still good enough for gophers and pidgeons out to 30 yards tho!
Before I upgraded it it was shooting 410fps with crossman wadcutters, after it was shooting 840-910fps
