I am wondering if there are kits to recess and finish crowns by hand, or even if this is possible. I really like a recessed crown as it protects when setting the rifle on it's muzzle (on a clean surface). I also like the recessed look on a lot of firearms.
Thanks' in advance,
Ken

I have the Brownells kit and have used it several times. A full kit is about $500, but you can buy a single calibre cutter and pilot set and then get more pilots as you need them.

I bought the Brownells set years ago, before the price increased dramatically.
With the three cutters, a muzzle can be finished nicely without a lathe.
I prefer to do crowns on my lathe, but still use the tool to chamfer the very edge of the bore.

Yes .. they will do a very nice job - frequently - but your preference to do crowns on a lathe is very wise as some barrel steel will cause the Brownell tool to chatter. I do not know why but I am suspicious that certain barrels that have been hammer forged are more prone to this than others -- I have a theory as to why but will not embarrass myself and draw ridicule by telling you what it is ... :)

One way of reducing the tendency to chatter is to run the pilot through a rag or patch, and force the tool to cut through the cloth. The flutes are packed.

Also works with chambering reamers. Slows down the rate of cut, reamer has to be pulled much more often.
