I have been toying with the idea of a Vz58 is 5.56/.223 but am just not sure about it's reliability. I know there were issues with early models but haven't heard or been able to find recent reviews about the rifle.
I had a Cz858 over a decade ago and absolutely loved it, but I'm not too keen on shooting corrosive surplus anymore and the price of commercial .223 is just hard to beat right now.

For anyone who has purchased one of these in the past 2-3 years, has the rifle been reliable? accurate? I just want to know if it functions and performs as well as the 7.62x39 version. Should I just get the rifle in the caliber it was designed for?

Thanks in advance for responses!

I've currently got a VZ58 in .223 Rem and love it very much
Put an aftermarket rear ghost ring site on it, and also a folding stock, making it very handy
Also installed the AR15 mag adapter too
Overall it's very reliable, perfectly accurate for my needs, and easy to maintain
It's also a lot of fun to shoot, everyone who tries it really likes it a lot
223 Ammo is cheap, you can load your own, and heavyweight 77gr is there for fun stuff too

I just acquired one of these. Put 50 rounds through it on my first range day without a single malfunction. It came with the mag adapter and one of the Amend2 plastic pistol magazines. The previous owner said they worked much better than the metal mags, but he didn't elaborate. I'm extremely happy with it so far. I was also pleasantly surprised with the accuracy; my best 5-round group of the day was about 1.5 inches with iron sights at 100m. Four of the holes were touching, with the one flyer.

My only complaint would be that the system may be a bit over-gassed, as every piece of brass came out with a big dent in the side where they rebounded off the stripper clip guide during ejection.

Your eyes are pretty good with open sights.

Love mine.
I must be some knd of freak since I actually like those blocky mags they come with.
More reliable than AR mags.

Don't let the denting panic you.
The piston system can take a lot more variation in ammo than an AR.
