Hey guys,

Looking at picking up a used VZ58 in a 7.5" or 11.8" length to complement my 18.6". I've had them lined up previously in 7.62x39, however the sale fell through on my part each time.

Now that I'm looking again, all I see on the EE are the 5.56 models. There is one 7.62x39, however it's more than I want to shell out; nonetheless -

5.56 owners, any regrets on the purchase? I was die-hard set on only getting a 7.62x39, however with their short appearances on the EE, the "rarity" seems to come along with an increased price, and I'm not looking to shell out $1000+ when the same rifle could be had for 6 or 7 hundred in 5.56. I've already got a 10.5" AR, but I'd just like to have the shorter version of the VZ58.

Are you happy with it as a range toy, or do you wish you would have held out or just got a 7.62x39?

Thanks in advance!

The days of the $600-$700 gun are gone. I searched high and low for my 762 compact and its in the mail as we speak. During my search I had multiple dealers offer me BNIB 556 guns all over $1100 now.

^ For sure, in either caliber, new, I'd be well over 1K before I made a phone call. However, just looking at used for now.

7.62 definitely has an edge for me, given the ammo I have and that only 1 rifle currently regularly chews through it, but I'm wondering if I'd be just as well off with a 5.56? I've got ample amounts of that too. Just seems like it should be a 7.62x39.

I went with the 762 because ammo is cheaper, more bang and if vz pistols mags become available I will be able to run regular mags without the adaptor. And if I pick up a surplus parts kit it should keep me plugging along for years to come. I know of the used one on the EE but Armco has one with goodies used too. Both will be the best deals you could find. Like you mentioned the 762 guns seem to go for more. I had one dealer offer a BNIB 762 for $1250! If you want a 556 misty river fly and tackle in terrace B.C. had both lengths for $880 2 weeks ago.

I picked up a 5.56 in 7.5" a couple years ago in a trade. I would have preferred the 7.62 but when trading you gotta take what you can get. I added the mag adapter and it's worked flawlessly. I have the 11.8" in 7.62 aswell. But the compact in 5.56 is my favorite. I have no regrets now getting the 5.56. I did at first before I got it for the same reasons as you but after I got it I really like it and it adds a little something different to my vz58 collection. For sheer fun at the range get the 7.5" in either cailber!! They rock!
With the mag adapter you get to use AR mags, AR mag release, mags drop free and when bfiles and HIT_MAN run out after 5 rounds I still got 10 or 12 to go in my beowulf mag ;)

There's a 5.56 7.5" on EE for $650

Ended up saying to hell with it and planked down the cash for a 7.5" in 7.62x39. All told it wasn't a hell of a lot more than the ones in 5.56 on the EE, and I already have a fair amount of 7.62x39 to chew through.

Now the waiting begins.

Just get an AR if your looking at the short barrel restricted Vz. They're still in the $500's and kick ass compared to the Vz,s for parts and accessories.

Thought about this, however I already have a 10.5" AR, and that's fine for me. Not looking for something to dress up, just something about the compact that appeals to me, espcially given my good experience with it's 18.6" counterpart. Plus, what's not to love about 7.62x39 with that factory folder? :D

Bfiles, where did you get the wood pieces, or are they one-of customs? I'd like to get a darker wooden grip and the chopped lower hand guard. Can an AK grip be made to fit on these?

So did you end up buying the one on the EE or from armco?

Well, that was a bust. Should have done my research on sellers I suppose.

The hunt continues. For anyone looking, Armco has one, but communications are the same as letter mail, and he can't find any of the stock parts.

I bought another crate of S&B 7.62x39 in anticipation of this as well. Disappointed to say the least.

I believe they have it, but I'll never know for sure. I wanted the out of the box stock version,we agreed on a price, he quoted me 117 for shipping (Canada Post says 31.xx . . . Huh) but I just wanted it so I said shag it I'll deal. Then almost a week after I send the EMT I'm told he can't find the stock parts and I should cancel the EMT. I attempted to amend the deal, but no-go, I wasn't paying extra for a bushnell sight and a rail when I just wanted the stock sight.

Again, pretty disappointed, seeing as I figured it was as good as mine. Oh well, have to work on getting my hopes up early . . . and buying pre-emptive celebratory crates of ammo :D

Now I feel like a #### for suggesting him. I searched high and low for mine. (Which just showed up yesterday and was worth the search!) I had posted in a few Facebook groups looking. One fellow said golden guns in beaver lodge Alberta had one BNIB on consignment. I called and was told no. So I gave up. This guy insisted they had one, he held it and said the lady there is very "difficult" to deal with. May be worth the call and be specific even mention its a consignment gun. Another lead was "Gobels" in London. I found mine before I got to calling them. I got mine at General Gun. They show sold out but may know where to get another. If those are all bust I know of 1 dealer who said they can get one but its gonna cost you.

Wow sorry about having to read all that!

No worries Hit_Man, I appreciate the help!

Gobles doesn't have any restricted versions, I just called both stores for anyone else on the hunt. I was looking at a used price point anyways so it probably would have been a little more than I was looking to spend called Golden and left a message as well, but I'm not looking to spend over a grand. EDIT: Golden got back to me, they do have one, asking 1200 - Too much for me, but it's there if one of you guys are looking.

I'll probably just keep an eye on the EE, and work the crates through my NR VZ58. I almost impulse bought the 5.56 one on the EE for 550, but I decided against it - I want the 7.62x39 if I ever do manage to get one.

It's funny. I called golden guns and explained exactly what I wanted. The lady called said no we don't have one. Then called me back two days later saying she checked with the distributor. And couldn't get one. LOL by this time I had found and ordered mine from a sponsor here. Nice people just clueless.
