Cuba

Cuba has a shocking lack of wildlife, everything from bugs on up to large mammals. Having travelled through many Carribean and South American countries, Cuba had very little to offer other than cows everywhere. Might have something to do with being a communist, agri-state that’s been spraying Chinese pesticides coast-to-coast for decades. Only quiet jungle I’ve ever been in was in Cuba, jungles everywhere are usually very loud with birds, bugs, and assorted creatures but this one was like a library.

Sad, it’s a pretty country otherwise.

A couple of the resort workers in Cayo Coco were hunters. Said that they were going to take me out the next day. Awesome. I never asked what they were hunting.

Found out the next day, it was dogs.

I hadn't planned on hunting, as I didnt know the legalities. But dogs? Nope. I guess that they do what the have to do.

Fantastic fishing off Cayo Coco, I can tell you that much. Caught 3 mai-mai's and a barracuda in a 4 hour trip. I'd be shocked if Trudeau's daddy didn't pass a law that says no guns for peasants.

I've heard of the dog hunts before. When we were in Havana we were shown that the dogs there all have government identification tags on their collars. If they don't then they are a stray and strays get put down immediately.

Cuba is kind of like a Native reserve. Stray mutts everywhere and most in bad shape.

Not true. Stray dogs are everywhere. Pets are not registered. I worked and lived there for 5 years, married to a Cuban for 18 years and go back every year. The only firearms Cubans are allowed is shotguns (and very few of those), foreigners can not bring or use firearms in the country. Some do hunt rabbits and a type of tree rat that can be eaten but there are no ungulates (there was years ago a type of small deer but has been eradicated). I have never on any part of the island I have visited heard of a Cuban hunting or eating a dog, strays are considered vermin. They will eat almost anything else though from Flamingo to crocodile but have to hunt and kill them without firearms.

They have many stray cats around, they are all over the resorts. Cuba also has some of the best bass fishing on the planet. They have some huge largemouths there in some of the lakes.

I was surprised to see a couple of White Tails in a game park setting, "Native" wildlife.

There are crocodiles in Cuba? Geez...wish I'd known that, I was exploring some pretty isolated spots looking for places to fish on the one trip I took to Cuba a few years back. lol (not even kidding) Didn't have allot of luck fishing from shore in Veradero. Some tourists told me it's because Cubans have caught/killed/eaten everything within casting distance of shore..but I have a difficult time believing that has anything to do with it. Still, I consider myself a fairly resourceful angler (been at it over 40 years) and I found the fishing particularly slow. Surprising..as I have a fair amount of experience surf fishing experience too (Florida and S. Carolina). I did spot a few bigger fish (barracuda) but for barracuda...they were smaller than I was expecting to see. A couple of chases/no takers. Seemed sort of stunned/disinterested. Enough Cuban heat/humidity...and I was in the same frame of mind. lol

Thanks for the reply's, I cant find anyone who is still doing hunting trips. When the US changed the travel restrictions again a lot of the US tour operators stopped going. On to plan B for a winter get away.
