I've loaded for the 338 Imperial Mag (Rum's predecessor), the 340 Wby, the 338-416 Rigby Improved and the 338 Lapua. All with 250 and 300 gr bullets. Used 8700, 7828, RL22 and 25, H1000. Speeds (with the 250 gr bullets, except Barnes X) ranged from 2940 fps to 3050 fps max. X bullets were slower. - dan
Keith always swore that a 250 gr. bullet going 3000fps. would be the ultimate long range, big game gun for North America, the .338 WM. and the .340 Weatherby didn't, that's why he helped with the .338/.378 KTH. That's about where the RUM sits, so what's not to like, unless you want to argue with Elmer. I like bigger cals. and getting a bit closer to my game, but I won't disagree with "THE" man.
I could never quite get 3000 with 250's from either the Imperial/RUM (nor the Lapua), all with 26" barrels. The 338/378 KT, 338-378 Wby, 338 Excaliber, and 338_416/416 improved all managed it though. - dan
I run 225 gr Hornady Interbonds in my 338 RUM Sendero for hunting, and use 250 gr bullets for fun shooting. Not many calibers rock steel gongs like the 338 RUM does, especially at distance.
I had a sako 75 rebarreled with a hart BBL 28". I use 94.5gr H1000 under a 250 gr accubond. 3020 is average velocity. Very accurate. You can load it hotter but my goal when I built it was a 250gr at 3000fps.
That is moving pretty good. I just worked up to 91 grains of Retumbo and a 250 TSX. I am only seeing 2870 fps. Accuracy is fantastic, but pressure signs are starting to show such as the primers being pretty flat and a light extractor mark on the base.
