Curious about my new (used) shotgun

Hello all,
I'm pretty much a shotgun rookie. I've been out trap shooting a few times, and have been busting hand tossed clays with a friend. I would like very much to get into trap and hunting in a serious way. I have yet to try it, but I suspect I will enjoy skeet and 5 stand as well.
I recently bought (through a friend) a Winchester Model 50 autoloader. It seems to be in ok shape, cycles perfectly well with target loads, and has a polychoke mounted. I'm not sure of the barrel length, but it is chambered in 2 3/4" only. There is a hairline crack in the wood forend and some very slight pitting in spots on the outside of the barrel. The bore is nice and shiny, and the rest of the internal parts seem to be in great shape, although after dis-assembly, it would appear the gun has not been cleaned in a very long time. The butt pad was old and hardened up, pretty much crumbling apart. I've removed it, and replaced it with a slip on pad.

My questions about this gun are:
-Was it a good purchase at $250?
-Would it be advisable to shoot steel shot through this gun?
-What setting should I use on the polychoke for trap, skeet, 5 stand, deer(not the best idea, I know, but I live in a shotgun with shot only area), ducks, geese, turkey, and grouse? It has settings marked slug, IC, Mod, I Mod, Full, Extra Full.
-Can anyone give me any other advice, and/or share some general knowledge with me regarding appropriate uses for this gun?

Your advice and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
