I don't know if our thinking is an indication of our economic prosperity,or simply the way we as hunters think-a new rifle is always the answear to whatever percieved reason we have for not shooting more accurately, farther, whatever. The old .22 lr,303, 30/30 and 30/06 have probably accounted for far more rabbits, squirrels, moose, deer, and bear than all the other ''new'' calibers combined-yet somehow these old tried and true calibers are deemed ''inadequite at best.Funny-isn't it?And I'm no different than everybody else-a ''new'' rifle will solve all my shortcomings!

i guess i am an odd one cause i prefer my .303 brit over most everything i have tried/seen for hunting. it may be a tad expensive to feed but for an all around reliable firearm that can handle most of canadas big game selection out to 150-200 yards *the most extreme ranges i have ever been in have been all under 150* i'd say it will defintly maintain its rank as my #1 hunting choice for big game

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

you need a semi auto muzzle breaked Winchester short mag with extra clips. don;t forget a fancy reddot or iluminated rectical!

remember if it doesn't pump ammo down range really fast, have a bullet that goes really fast, and the case isn't short and fat, it will never kill anything.

don;t forget one shot is never enough either. throw out your .30-06! and your .303!

animals have evolved and hides are now infused with carbon and and kevlar!

and dont forget, what if the zombies come?

oh my oh my!

Good point... I think for most it is a more matter of "want" over "need" when considering a "new" rifle or a "new" cartridge... ;)

There are hunters that shoot and shooters that hunt.

There are also collectors that neither shoot or hunt and others that do one or the other or both.

I personally think that life would be very boring if we all shot Enfields chambered in .303 Brit and drove black Fords and all wore the same sneakers, jeans and t-shirts. Only institutions such as the military, prisons, and church schools require all their members conform to a set standard. Thankfully "Real" life is a lot more colourful than that.

Marketing.Marketing.Marketing.Marketing.Marketing.

There are enough old guns out there that no news ones would be sold if there was nothing "new and inproved" to inspire the beginners.

Which beginner would want to use a 90 year, obsolete rifle in an obsolete caliber that has killed hundreds of thousand of game animals when a hyped up super-killer(with new tech super bullets made to withstand impacts 500ft/sec more than needed) that destroys most the meat(if it actuals hits anything becuase the shooters is afraid of the blast and recoil).

Since when does a hobby entail only *one* of anything?

Guns, cars, toys, girlfrie........(oops!

Oh pshaw. You're all a bunch of reactivist old codgers. New stuff is cool, and just plain fun. Of course you don't NEED it, but since when is life only about meeting needs?

sheesh

;)

Hey-I didn't say I'm not just as fascinated with the new stuff as anybody else, but when you stop and think about it-Given the ranges most game is taken at-the 30/30, 303,and 30/06 are hard to beat.Personally, having a rifle capable of taking game at 400yards is pretty much accademic -my average deer shot is probably closer to 40 or 50 yards-and the farthest shot I've ever taken might have gone 175.My favourite caliber [and rifle] is a 6.5x55 swede and if I do my job-it does it's job-very efficiently, too.Nothing ever went much more than 20-30 yards, deer, bear or moose.
Funny enough-at a time when super magnums are in vogue-look at the resurgance of interest in the old 45-70

Personally I like firearms, period!!:D
I have many rifles in wildcat calibers and custom barrels,
but I like hunting with the old original rifles like 577/450, .577 Snider, 45/70, or a patched round ball better than most of my other rifles.

I have a certain affenity for the first rifle my father built in the 50's, a shortended up Lee Enfield with a one pice stock and Kahles scope.
It handles well, is super accurate for hunitng, and has a good "carry " to it.

It's a bolt action, mind you, but i still like hunting with it!

My last 4 rifle purchases have been a .44WCF, 35 Remington, 30-06 and a thutty-thutty. I guess I'm just not with the trendy folks.
