This is mostly theory so keep that in mind:
When things were going real south in the US in the protests and COVID and such, we actually had better prices and more availability of ammo. I chalk that up to pre-existing contracts and such that ensured we had access to ammunition. Given the demand in the US, the cost of transport, and the desperation of the people to pay more (in USD no less), why wouldn't the ammo producers down there not renew Canadian contracts and keep the ammo for sale in the US? How the turn tables have turned, as the smart ones say. Now they have much more selection and availability than us, and their pool of purchasing power keeps expanding as new owners gobble up the supply. All of this works in combination with their prioritization of military contracts, and there's a new type of ammo that's going into mass production soon,
and the factories prioritize the better-selling calibers.
I don't think we'll see some of the high demand stuff, even in common calibers, for some time. The CCI .22 Minimag HPs are a great example. They're mostly gone now, but used to be on every shelf. And PPU 7.62x39 PSP hasn't been imported in some time either. So when it comes to the rare stuff, prepare to wait. I'll let you know if I see some of the rare stuff around though.
For anyone who owns a .223, Canada's Gun Store has a pretty awesome deal right now that I don't think I'll see again in my life. I know it's not a rare caliber but a guy wouldn't be stupid for stocking up while it's available and at this price:
