Okay, I've decided to forgo a 25-06 and begin the process of filfilling my desire to have a custom rifle built for myself.

Here it goes:

I'm thinking of 7x57 or 7x57AI as potential calibres.

I originally wanted to have one built on a Sako action but have found a Husqvarna Hi-Power that would save me some cost and still maintain that European nostalgia that I am foolishly caught up in.

I'd like a light-weight walnut stock (field grade or grade "A") in the classic style, with a standard cheek-piece, nice checkering, and a rosewood forend tip and steel butt-plate (could be engaved at some point). It should include a good recoil pad and sling swivels.

I want a match-grade, or as close to match-grade as is reasonably cost effective, barrel of around 22 - 23 inches.

I'm not decided with respect to open sites or not, and I may want an octagonal barrel.

If I supply the Husqvarna Hi-Power, what is a relatively accurate ball-park for a final cost?

Here is a nice "classic" stock, but with schnable in stead of rosewood fore end. It was selected for light weight and is US$275:

Sounds like a really nice project!:)

Half round/octagon

Ralf Martini in Cranbrook can make one. Even include integral rib and ramp if you want. Serious dollars though. Guntech's comments about files is not to be taken lightly: I saw a job Don Robinson did by draw filing a barrel that was very nice (although he opted to only do 5 flats and leave the bottom round). I suspect there is less chance of stressing a barrel by filing than there is by machining.

Realistically, this project will probably result in something of a safe queen that will become a bit of an hereloom for my eldest son (if it turns out well I may try a 6.5x55 for his brother) and will probably take at least a couple of years to complete, so I have lots of time to save.

How about Canadian sources for:

high-quality walnut stocks

barrels (capable of half octagon half round match grade)

Mike is right about the stock, it is from The Great American Gunstock Co.

I haven't found, in my searches, a Canadian supplier of high quality walnut stocks. I think that many US stock makers have access to local blanks, and have a large enough market to warrant stocking them. I have seen blanks offered for up to US$4500. Then the work required to shape, inlet, checker and the rest are expensive too. I realised a while ago that I simply can not afford, at this time, to build what I really want. I'd say that for what you are talking about, you'd need to spend at least $2500, and more if you go for the octagon or half octagon route. A high quality checkering job would probably run close to $500 by itself.

Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces offers octagon barrels by Heym. I believe they are just under $600 in the white.

Yeah, I figure this one will be expensive. I found a used one that sounds as though its similar; selling price is $2500. If I dream about it, research it, plan for it, save for it, and then maybe do it, it may be worth it.

Right now I need to decide whether I am going to buy the donor action, after that the details will come over time.

Custom Gun

I had that very gun posted for sale in the hunting gun forum back in November I think, and it has a Swarovski 30mm scope and EWA qd rings. The whole package is $2500. Still got it, I must not have been asking enough. D.H.
