Just thought I would share my latest project. Im putting together a "Target Style" 6.5 Grendel. Ordered a nice 24" pipe and 6" muzzle device so I wanted a nice long and beefy handguard to go along with it. Couldn't really find anything I like so I designed my own and it it currently being machined. We got some work in the shop so it might have to go on hold for a bit but its getting there. The bottom is done, next it will go to the five axis for finish machining.

So I finally got it all done and anodized. Did a final Mock up. When its final assembled that little gap between the hand guard and upper will be gone. I'm pretty happy how it turned out.

How does CNC hollow out the inside?

The machine you see it on is called a "boring mill". The head is horizontal so they use a long cutter and machine the stock out of the center from both directions. It is machined from the side, not the top. It will go onto another machine for finish cutting since the boring mill does not leave a nice finish.

As a machinist I gotta say that looks great! Hope it's not to heavy, and a good thing you can do the work yourself; that would cost a bundle if you had to pay a shop to make it.

I agree about the weight. I think it should be OK. Im putting it on A "target style" AR so im not overly concerned. I wanted something big....but hopefully I didn't over do it!....lol
